Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are an emerging contaminant of global concern due to their carcinogenic/mutagenic nature, ubiquitous occurrence, long range transport, bioaccumulative characteristics, involvement in food chain and food web as well as toxicity in almost all segments of the environment. This contributed volume offers chapters that provide a detailed description of PAH ubiquity, sources, distribution, fate, derivatives, transport, detection techniques as well as remediation methods. Various anthropogenic activities are responsible for their dangerous concentrations of PAHs in the environment. The detection and remediation of such contaminants is the major challenge that this book aims to address. The chapters here provide cases detailing different adsorptive as well as photochemical and biological mechanisms for PAH removal . Green technologies, multidisciplinary approaches and new advancements for PAH remediation are also emphasized for better applicability with the aim of environmental sustainability.

This book examines innovative strategies for managing and treating waste at the end of its life cycle, including landfilling and waste incineration. It addresses various types of solid waste, their causes and impacts, and the technologies designed to minimize and repurpose them. This approach, commonly known as materials management, aims to comprehensively analyze how materials are handled before resorting to conventional waste-disposal methods. The book highlights the importance of converting waste into energy, biofuels, and compost, while emphasizing source reduction and extended producer responsibility. The ultimate goal is to manage materials across the entire economy at every stage of their life cycle, covering all phases of material and product production, from raw material extraction, design, and manufacturing to transportation and consumer use. Additionally, it discusses reuse, recycling, and final disposal practices.
