It is often repeated that we live today in a ‹post-truth› world. But this problem has a long history. Greek philosophers investigated the origins of truth (and the will to truth) in hope to separate truth from illusion. But already Machiavelli equated the concept of truth with the notion of what seems to be true. And today? Perhaps, we are paying the price of naivety. In this book, the author approaches the idea of deliberative democracy with reservation, attempting to expose the vain hopes rooted in the Enlightenment tradition, which placed the desire for truth at the fore, and relegated the desire for illusion to the shadows. The author analyses competition as one of four coordinating mechanisms helping agents mutually to orientate their actions, avoid chaos, and produce social order. Competition is a key dimension of developed societies. It helps to structure and is also conducive to social change. Competing agents constrain one another, making it hard for anyone to change their position. They discover new routines the best of which may later be institutionalized. Competition is a solvent of power but only in relatively equal societies. Entrenched wealth or status restricts competition, thus impoverishing social order. The author also evaluates the theory of competition to explore such topics as corporate social responsibility, relations between government, business and civil society, and reflexivity in social sciences.

The subject of this work is the rise and fall of Europe’s aim to rebuild its position in global politics after the Cold War. With success in the unification of Europe and the subsequent deepening and enlargement of its integration, the Union set itself the ambitious task of becoming a global power, even a superpower. However, starting with the first decade of the XXI century, we have witnessed a rapid erosion of the international position of Europe (the EU). The author carefully analyses the causes of the EU’s failure in pursuing the role of European representative, Europe thereby pretending to the role of one of three world powers. Besides cultural and demographic trends, the author identifies the main factors leading to this failure: the divergent interests of individual European powers, their incapacity to act in a geopolitical context and the rapid erosion of Europe’s civilizational identity. The rapid decline of Europe’s international position threatens the appearance of a new and bipolar global arrangement together with the further marginalisation of Europe.

In the book, authors from eleven post-communist countries analyse the specific legal and political character of the organs of the control of law constitutionality in post-Soviet states. This is done through explaining the legal and political character of those bodies as well as their place in the system of the state power. The authors also examine tasks assigned to those bodies, the manner of their establishment, the course of their work, the legal force of their decisions and the legal status of their members. In the conclusions, the authors refer to the optimisation of the political status of the organs controlling the constitutionality of law as organs of the protection of the constitution.Research findings, conclusions and recommendations formulated in the book can be applied with a view to changing the mechanisms of the protection of constitutionality in post-Soviet states or presenting lawmakers in other countries with consequences of adopting particular legal solutions.

The theoretical goal of the research presented in this book was to include elements of social network analysis into the classical neo-institutional theories of the government coalition formation process. The empirical goal was to verify the benefits and accuracy of this modified analytical model in the analysis of three deviant government coalition formation cases: in Canada (2008), Great Britain (2010) and New Zealand (2017).The authors reconstruct the institutional framework and visualise the networks of connections between main actors. They argue that the transition from a stable configuration of a two-party system to a multi-party system that is extraneous for the political tradition of these democracies has significantly influenced the process of government coalition formation and cabinets appointment.

The book is devoted to relations between the ethnic diversity and the quality of governance at the local level. Opolskie province in Poland is a case for explaining this interdependence. That is because of its history of multiculturalism and the present state of its ethnic diversity. The important feature of this region is, that nearly half of the communes is ethnically homogenous when the rest is ethnically diversified with a strong position of German and Silesian minorities. The preliminary assumption was, that the quality of governance would be higher in communes characterized by ethnic diversity. On the basis of the nested analysis method, authors conducted quantitative and qualitative analysis.

The analysis of the malpractices at all stages of the electoral cycle and their impact on the political regime is the primary objective of this book. The research focuses on Turkey. However, the authors move one step further and try to present the Turkish case from a comparative perspective. They analyse selected countries in Central Europe, the Balkans and Latin America. The book presents a record of oral accounts given by liquidators who participated in minimizing the effects of the Chernobyl disaster. The main research goal was to present the circumstances of actions taken in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in 1986–1988 from the perspective of direct participants of the events in question. The overall work is complemented with archival, press materials and other documentation never published before, as well as materials from the private archives of the survivors. The book presents the reality of the clean-up operations undertaken in the area of the catastrophe and shows the community of liquidators, their living conditions and everyday life in the Chernobyl Zone, as well as the reality in which Chernobyl veterans lived after returning to their homeland.

The book presents the reader with an applied analysis of how the concepts of information and manipulation were illustrated in the Romanian press when the Securitate files were revealed, based on the case of Mona Muscă, a controversial topic that was widely debated by most dailies at the time. One of the most important roles played by the press is agenda setting – the role of setting priorities on the individual’s agenda. Journalists draw up an imaginary list of topics of primary interest for public debate and forming different currents of opinion. The analyzed press segment revealed the predilection for a speech condemning Mona Muscă. The message received by the target audience was not a balanced, objective one, but one that contradicts the deontology of the journalistic profession.

The problem of preventing mass human-rights violations and atrocity crimes is one of the key issues in international relations. They show that although the international community has significantly increased its capacity to prevent, it has not created a coherent system of prevention.

In modern political science, the phenomenon of political leadership is described and explained using diverse theoretical models, different analytical perspectives, or different research scales. Keeping in mind this theoretical and research pluralism, the author suggests applying an original integral explanatory strategy, which defines the relational leadership asymmetry between the leader and followers in terms of a dialectical subject–object relationship (co-determination); that is to say, in terms of a dynamic and complex political process in which the interdependencies and mutual influences of the leader and followers fall under analysis.
