This fully-illustrated catalogue publishes 1601 ancient Greek coins issued by cities stretching from the modern Crimea to the area of Aeolis on the west coast of modern Turkey. This is a most welcome addition to the SNG's cataloguing of the Ashmolean Museum's rich holdings, the first since Part IV appeared in 1981. It will be of interest to numismatists, coin collectors, and scholars and students of the archaeology and history of the Greek world.

This fully-illustrated catalogue publishes 2021 pre-imperial ancient Greek coins from an area of Asia Minor covering Caria to Commagene but excluding Cyprus. Each coin is carefully photographed and its description appears opposite for ease of reference. Technical details are supplied for each coin, with comparanda and provenances in nearly every case. This welcome addition to the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum series continues the cataloguing of the Ashmolean Museum's rich holdings. The catalogue is part of the series of volumes of the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum project, which under the auspices of the British Academy aims to publish major collections of Greek coins. Each volume gives brief descriptions of each coin, along with its suggested date, mint attribution, technical details such as metal and weight, references, provenance and accession number. Text and plates are interleaved, so that each coin description is opposite the photographs of both sides of the coin concerned.The current volume catalogues the 2150 ancient pre-imperial Greek coins from Ionia in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Owing to the generosity of donors like Dr E. S. G. ('Stanley') Robinson and J. G. Milne, the museum's collection is particularly strong in this area. This and the combined expertise of the contributors makes the volume a new standard reference work for Ionian coins, complete with comprehensive up-to-date bibliography and multiple indices.

At the first two presentations of this play in 165 and 160 BC, the prospect of rival attractions drove the actors prematurely off the stage, and it was only in September 160 that it was finally performed in full. For this reason the play has been seen as spanning virtually the whole of Terence's career, while the fact that the playwright refused to abandon it to oblivion indicates the importance which he himself attached to it. Though its plot is founded upon the conventional theme of marital problems, The Mother in Law departs radically from the usual treatment of such topics to become at times more closely akin to tragedy than to comedy. It is the purpose of this edition to show Terence's skill not only in terms of plot construction and development but also in character portrayal and his ability to maintain the suspense of the situation almost to the last moment.

Though in later antiquity the social comedies of Menander ranked second in popularity only to Homer, his plays were for centuries thought to be irretrievably lost. Only in this century have instances begun to re-emerge from the sands of Egypt, and it was not until 1958 that a complete play, Dyskolos or The Bad-Tempered Man, came to light. With this we can now gauge in full the skill that Menander brought to his works, even in the early phase of his career. In preparing this edition, the author aims to make accessible to readers some of the consummate sophistication in dramatic technique and use of language that once produced the question, "Menander and Life, which of you imitated the other?" Greek text with facing translation, commentary and notes.

It was only in the 20th century that large sections of the plays began to emerge from the sands of Egypt, enabling modern readers to gauge for themselves the correctness of earlier verdicts.Following on from the author's edition of Menander's Bad-Tempered Man ( dyskolos ) the present volume aims to provide readers with ready access to the playwright's consummate sophistication in dramatic technique through two, albeit incomplete, plays, The Shield ( aspis ) and arbitration ( epitrepontes ). As before, the Greek text is accompanied by a translation aimed at providing a version that is readable, while at the same time remaining close enough to the original to make comparison of the two a feasible proposition.
