A comprehensive investigation of notions of "time" in deuterocanonical and cognate literature, from the ancient Jewish up to the early Christian eras, requires further scholarship. The aim of this collection of articles is to contribute to a better understanding of "time" in deuterocanonical literature and pseudepigrapha, especially in Second Temple Judaism, and to provide criteria for concepts of time in wisdom literature, apocalypticism, Jewish and early Christian historiography and in Rabbinic religiosity.Essays in this volume, representing the proceedings of a conference of the "International Society for the Study of Deuterocanonical and Cognate Literature" in July 2019 at Greifswald, discuss concepts and terminologies of "time", stemming from novellas like the book of Tobit, from exhortations for the wise like Ben Sira, from an apocalyptic time table in 4 Ezra, the book of Giants or Daniel, and early Christian and Rabbinic compositions. The volume consists of four chapters that represent different approaches or hermeneutics of "time:" I. Axial Ages: The Construction of Time as "History", II. The Construction of Time: Particular Reifications, III. Terms of Time and Space, IV. The Construction of Apocalyptic Time. Scholars and students of ancient Jewish and Christian religious history will find in this volume orientation with regard to an important but multifaceted and sometimes disparate topic.

The polymath theologian and orientalist Gustaf Dalman founded the institute that today bears his name in 1920 at Greifswald University. This book documents the collection of papers that were presented at an international and interreligious conference held at the Alfried Krupp Institute for Advanced Studies at Greifswald to celebrate the Gustaf Dalman Institute’s 100th anniversary–after two years of yearning. While, and precisely because, the cultural and religious heritage of the Southern Levant can no longer be researched as it was in the institute’s early days, this centenary offers a welcome opportunity to acknowledge, and critically assess, Dalman’s groundbreaking studies. Different contributions in this volume, written by internationally renowned experts in the field, provide an encyclopedic overview of Dalman’s interests and diverse and comprehensive fields of scholarship. Generally speaking, the proceedings present five thematic threads to navigate through Dalman’s fields: Epigraphic, archaeological and architectural investigations to Jerusalem, Dalman’s examination of the natural world in the Southern Levant, scripture and language studies, Dalman’s idea of photographing the "Holy Land" and Dalman’s legacy.

Ziel des vorliegenden Sammelbandes, der die gleichnamige internationale Tagung (2009) am Krupp-Kolleg in Greifswald dokumentiert, ist die Formulierung neuer Perspektiven "Biblischer Theologien" vor dem Hintergrund bereits vorliegender Ergebnisse. Ausgangspunkte bieten die ersten Summen aus den jeweiligen theologischen Disziplinen: Altes bzw. Neues Testament und Systematische Theologie. Von hier aus behandeln die Einzelbeiträge verschiedene Fragestellungen, die sowohl Kontroversen als auch die Fundamente und Perspektiven auf Quellen jenseits des Kanons berücksichtigen. Die aus unterschiedlichen theologischen Disziplinen beigesteuerten Zugänge werden so in ein interdisziplinäres Gespräch zwischen Exegese und Systematik eingebunden und eröffnen einen nahezu enzyklopädisch-theologischen Blick auf das Thema "Biblische Theologie". Zudem ergeben sich Leitlinien einer internationalen und generationenübergreifenden Diskussion, da sowohl etablierte und anerkannte Wissenschaftler als auch Nachwuchsforscher aus Deutschland, England, den Niederlanden, Schottland, Schweden und den USA beteiligt sind. Die Autorinnen und Autoren befassen sich mit paradigmatischen Zugängen über Quellen und konkrete Fragestellungen, aber auch mit hermeneutischen Einschätzungen und übergreifenden Themen in der aktuellen Diskussion.
