Making Media Futures offers a multi-perspectival exploration of how imaginaries and knowledge of the future are constructed in and through various media.The volume addresses the discursive dimensions of imaginaries and future visions as well as the impact of technological, material, and cultural conditions on the propagation of future discourses through media. Providing both theoretically detailed and empirically rich investigations, the contributions offer a wide range of cases spanning the century from the end of World War II until today and looking at examples from the Southern Hemisphere as well as the Global North. Bringing together scholars in media studies, science and technology studies (STS), and the history and philosophy of technology, the chapters discuss future visions and imaginations of quantum computing, the uncertainty and impact of AI-based text-to-image generation, the ideology behind 5G telecommunication standards, imaginaries of the Internet of Things, transmedia strategies in global and local climate protests, how broadcast radio was implicated in the evangelical mission imaginary, and how early visions of automating scholarly information management shaped standards and ideals of academia. The volume thus complements existing approaches and analytical frameworks for the study of imaginaries and futures discourses with perspectives that are sensitive to the plurality of media-specific conditions and technologies.The book will interest students and scholars working in media studies, STS, history and philosophy as well as at the intersection of engineering, humanities and social sciences, on matters such as sustainability, ethics, and responsible innovation.

The global environmental crisis, technological developments, the COVID-19 pandemic, and ongoing economic and political globalization are just a few of the developments that are massively increasing the pressure for transformation on regions, companies and society as a whole. In addition, the digital age is accelerating transformation processes that are already underway. This contributed book addresses these developments and presents a new framework for transformation research and practice that has been developed and already validated by researchers of the RWTH Aachen University. The RWTH way includes inter- and transdisciplinary approaches from many disciplines, looking at technological and societal change from different perspectives. A distinction is made between analysis, i.e., research on transformation processes, impact, i.e., transformational research, and change in research itself, i.e. research transformation. The book not only creates a new understanding of transformation research, but also provides actionable impulses for scholars and practitioners in many fields. This is an open access book.

Spätestens seit Beginn der industriellen Revolution ist methodisch erzeugtes und abgesichertes Wissen eine Ressource von entscheidender gesellschaftlicher Bedeutung. Was rechtfertigt es also, die gegenwärtige gesellschaftliche Realität in besonderer Weise als die einer Wissensgesellschaft zu kennzeichnen? Die Autoren dieses Bandes bieten Antworten auf diese Frage an. Sie sind sich darin einig, dass nicht allein der quantitative Zuwachs des Produktionsfaktors Wissen ausschlaggebend ist, sondern darüber hinaus eine engere Verkopplung wissenschaftlicher und anderer gesellschaftlicher Aktivitäten zu verzeichnen ist. Dies erhöht zum einen gesellschaftliche Lernchancen und führt zu neuen Ergänzungsverhältnissen von wissenschaftlichem Wissen und anderen Wissensformen. Zum anderen aber werden die Risiken wissenschaftlichen Wissens zunehmend zu gesellschaftlichen Risiken.

Seit einigen Jahren wird die Wissenschaft mit weit reichenden und neuartigen Anforderungen konfrontiert. Auf der einen Seite wird die Wissenschaft immer mehr unter der Perspektive wirtschaftlicher Nutzbarkeit wahrgenommen. Auf der anderen Seite werden neuartige Risikopotenziale und ethische Ambivalenzen öffentlich thematisiert, und dies mündet in den Ruf nach frühzeitiger Reflexion der möglichen Folgen wissenschaftlichen Handelns. Es hat sich jedoch gezeigt, dass die Wissenschaft dem Anspruch nach Folgenreflexion und -verantwortung schon deshalb nur begrenzt gerecht werden kann. Die von außen heran getragenen Erwartungen lassen das Nichtwissen der Wissenschaft immer deutlicher werden. Somit gerät die Wissenschaft zusehends in ein Dilemma zwischen gesteigerter Folgenverantwortung einerseits, wachsendem Nichtwissen andererseits. Das Buch möchte mit den beiden Konzepten "Soziologie des wissenschaftlichen Nichtwissens" und "Science Assessment" einen Beitrag zur Analyse dieser Situation leisten und damit neue Perspektiven für die Wissenschaftsforschung sowie Impulse zur politischen Gestaltung des Verhältnisses von Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft geben.

Die Zukunft wurde in modernen Gesellschaften als Horizont unbegrenzter Möglichkeiten wissenschaftlich-technischer und damit auch gesellschaftlicher Entwicklung begriffen. Dieser optimistischen Sichtweise entgegengesetzt zeigt sich heute, wie sehr gegenwärtiges Handeln diesen Horizont von Möglichkeiten gerade begrenzt. In der Folge muss Fortschritt neu bewertet, Zukunft bewusst gestaltet werden. Entsprechend verschieben sich die Muster gesellschaftlicher Zeitstrukturierung, die analytisch als Zeitlandschaften erfasst werden. Die mit diesen Verschiebungen verbundenen Konflikte provozieren Rufe nach einer Zeitpolitik. Mit Blick auf die Risikobewältigung in spätmodernen Gesellschaften werden in diesem Band Probleme und Perspektiven einer zeitkritischen Wissenspolitik diskutiert.
