This book integrates the material of the lecture series “Blockchain and Robotic Process Automation”, offered at Kiel University. The lecture series sheds light on current research topics on blockchain and robotic process automation (RPA) also in combination with business process management (BPM) or process mining. In this series, leading scientists and business experts give insights into the use of the blockchain technology and RPA.

The seven contributions included offer a general introduction into blockchain and smart contracts, and detail the extraction of meaningful events for process mining from blockchain, challenges of blockchain-based collaborative business processes, executing Decision Model and Notation decisions on the blockchain, a blockchain-based solution for digital payment, blockchain use cases in transportation and logistics, and automatically identifying process automation candidates using natural language processing.

This Festschrift is dedicated to Ralf Steinmetz on the occasion of his retirement. The honoree is a full professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany, where he leads the Multimedia Communications lab. He has supervised over 105 successful PhD students and remains committed to his vision of achieving “seamless adaptive multimedia communications.” He has been widely recognized for his contributions to the field, prestigious accolades include an Honorary Doctorate from RWTH Aachen University and a Chair of Excellence at the University Carlos III de Madrid. He is also a fellow of several esteemed professional organizations, including the IEEE, the ACM, the GI, and the VDE ITG.

A pioneer in multimedia and networking, Ralf Steinmetz’s work opened up further research in topics such as distributed systems, e-learning, and serious games. The contributions in this volume reflect his huge impact on research, technical developments, and careers in the areas of multimedia and networking: in Part I, the chapters discuss past research results and their impact, often applying a survey style; in Part II, researchers present current results; and in Part III, the chapters give an outlook on future research directions.

The 6 short and 10 full papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 37 submissions. The volume also contains one invited talk in full paper length. The contributions were organized in topical sections named: microservices and containers; security; cloud resources; services; internet of things and data streams; and industrial applications of service and cloud computing. 

This volume contains the technical papers presented in the workshops associated with the European Conference on Service-Oriented and Cloud Computing, ESOCC 2016, held in Vienna, Austria, in September 2016: 4th International Workshop on Cloud for IoT, CLloT 2016, Second International Workshop on Cloud Adoption and Migration, CloudWays 2016, First International Workshop on Patterns and Pattern Languages for SOCC: Use and Discovery, PATTWORLD 2016, combined with the First International Workshop on Performance and Conformance of Workflow Engines, PEaCE 2016, IFIP WG SOS Workshop 2016 Rethinking Services ResearCH, ReSeRCH 2016. Furthermore, there is a topical section presenting the results of the PhD Symposium. The abstracts of the presentations held at the European Projects Forum, EU Projects 2016, are included in the back-matter of the volume.

The 15 full papers included in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 49 submissions. They focus on specific topicsin service-oriented and cloud computing domains such as limits and/or advantages of existing cloud solutions, future internet technologies, efficient and adaptive deployment and management of service-based applications across multiple clouds, novel cloud service migration practices and solutions, digitization of enterprises in the cloud computing era, federated cloud networking services.
