Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Gender Studies, grade: A, University of Auckland, course: Gender and Development, language: English, abstract: The essay examines and scrutinizes the adoption and implementation of GenderMainstreaming in the development cooperation of the European Union (EU). It reviews the theoretical concept of Gender Mainstreaming linked to feminist theory in order to reflect upon the adaptation of Gender Mainstreaming within the EU. Herefrom seven criterias are deduced in order to analyse the adoption and implementation of Gender Mainstreaming in the EU development cooperation. Key issues are the political willigness of the EU towards gender equality, gender training of staff, internal assessment and evaluation, the two sidedness of Gender Mainstreaming, the representation of women in decision-making, gender analyses of the social contexts and the actual impact of Gender Mainstreaming. Concluding the essay identifies a key problem in the transfer of a genderperspective in policies into practice and therefore into actual transformation of structures and gender hierarchies.

Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Gender Studies, grade: A, University of Auckland, course: Political Theory of the Environment, language: English, abstract: Feminism and Environmentalism are both recent phenomens in political theory. Theyboth challenge mainstream politics as movements and as critical concepts. Thus theyhave in common that they are in themselves political and question the establishment. As concepts they can be applied in political theory to a variation of ideologies andinterrupt the political scene. Andrew Dobson and Robyn Eckersley argue that there is arising interest of the mainstream in environmental thoughts as they can contribute tomajor political concepts like democracy, justice and others. Herein they see a parallel tofeminist theory which has a major impact on a broad range of aspects in political theory(Dobson/Eckersley. 2006: 3). In ecofeminism both concepts merge together. Val Plumwood calls ecofeminism the'hybrid area' which aims at developing a feminism that is ecological and an ecologythat is feminist (Plumwood. 2006: 51). Thus the question is how both concepts mergewithin ecofeminism and how they can contribute to each other and have a larger impacton political theory in general. As part of this essay I will examine the basic arguments ofecofeminism and its implications for both concepts as well as on political theory ingeneral. I will begin with a definition of the major terms: environmentalism/ecologism, feminismand ecofeminism. [...]

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: B+ (1.7), University of Auckland, language: English, abstract: In the last years the European Union (EU) transformed the European gender regime towards gender equality thoroughly. This dissertation deals with the question of the EU's external influence on transforming societies. Is the external influence coherent with internal claims? Trade is the EU's most important external policy area. The EU is an economic giant based on the largest single market in the world. Thus the EU has power in and through trade. The EU makes increasingly the adaptation of normative standards acondition to access its market. Does the EU integrate also standards on gender equality? And does the EU transform gender regimes globally through trade? What impacts does the EU have on gender regimes? This dissertation examines gender impacts in the Sustainability Impact Assessments that show possible impacts of trade agreements between the EU and its partners. The analysis shows that gender is secondary to economic growth and not directed towards gender equality. As aconsequence the EU does not use its power through trade and the coherence of internal and external efforts is questionable.
