It features a multiplicity of authors, including academics and practitioners from all corners of the globe and from across the communicative spectrum. The handbook is divided into four parts: (1) Meta-theoretical, theoretical, and methodological approaches in conflict and peace communication research; (2) Conflict communication; (3) Peace communication; and (4) Cross-cutting and emergent themes. This handbook is essential reading for scholars, research-driven practitioners, graduate-level students, and upper-level undergraduate students in conflict and peace communication within disciplines such as communication studies, political science, international relations, security studies, and human rights.

Contestation in Civil Society looks at the dynamic relationship between noise, listening and civil action as the key to understanding how societies communicatively make decisions about their internal and external boundaries.By focusing on the three components of noise, listening and civil action, the book moves attention away from an exclusive focus on what is being communicated – the communicator, the statement, the speech and so on. It argues that what is being communicated – the noise – does not lead in and of itself to civil action but rather that the audience – the listeners – plays a crucial role in determining what the noise means, whether it is judged legitimate or not and whether any civil action should be taken.Exploring how the relationship between noise, listening and civil action plays out within the context of contestation will interest academics and scholars of political studies, political philosophy, communication, sociology, media and cultural studies.

This book illustrates how researchers, non-academic partners, and communities can work together to create social change. It presents successful examples of knowledge exchange activities about menstrual health, menstrual education, and reducing menstrual stigma. These activities draw on the author's research with menstrual activists and young people. Through co-authorship of chapters and quotations from non-academic partners and communities, Knowledge Exchange and Menstrual Equity includes and amplifies the voices of those who inform, and are impacted by, research but are rarely visible in resulting publications.Five case studies use testimonies and other forms of evidence from partners and beneficiaries including the British Standards Institution (BSI), social enterprises, NGOS, community groups, educators, and pupils, to illustrate how knowledge exchange (KE) activities based on the author’s research have shaped policies, improved knowledge about menstruation, reduced menstrual stigma, and helped to foster more inclusive cultures in workplaces and schools. These include the creation of guidance with community engagement specialist, Acushla Young, on how to communicate effectively about menstruation on social media; the author’s chairing a BSI committee to create a workplace standard on menstruation, menstrual health, and menopause; collaborations with Cysters, Irise International, the Menstrual Health Project, and Diversecity to create faith-informed menstrual health resources and workshops; and a collaboration with a teacher and performer to produce a theatre show and design a menstrual curriculum in primary schools.Reflecting on challenges within KE, this book is a valuable resource for researchers at all career stages who want to learn about knowledge exchange and impact, who are planning KE activities, or who are intending to measure the impact of their research. It offers guidance on how to conduct KE in an ethical, inclusive, effective, and accessible manner that brings genuine benefits to organisations and communities.

This book argues that early European Commission officials envisaged an integrated civil Europe from the outset. This Civil Europe was, it was hoped, to become home to a European citizenry equipped with a European civil consciousness that complemented their national and local loyalties.

Ultimately, civil and peaceful cooperation depends on the observance of discursive civility and the building of safe discursive spaces in which civil engagement between different groups of society (including former combatants and survivors) can safely take place.
