The Abstractiones is a work in medieval logic from the second half of the 13th century. Clearly a product of the British university culture and much cited, quoted and imitated, it is attributed in two manuscripts to 'Master Richard the Sophist'. This Richard is referred to by other philosophers and logicians as 'The Master of Abstractions' - an honorific title which indicates that his work was a standard textbook. The Abstractiones is a collection of sophismata, or logical puzzles of increasing complexity and difficulty which have been gathered under logical operators like 'all'. Each sophisma is introduced by a proposition that appears to be both provably true and provably false, like 'God knows whatever he knew'. The Master determines the truth or falsity of the proposition and analyses the defects of the arguments that have been offered by detecting logical fallacies, equivocal expressions and the like. The work as we have it is clearly the result of a process of development, modification, and interpolation, probably extending over at least a generation. Although there came to be works that imitated the Abstractions and followed some of its plan and style, these are 'descendants,' rather than variations. The Abstractions gives us a better sense than does an independent and original work of medieval logic like William of Ockham's Summa Totius Logicae of how instruction in techniques of argumentation and reasoning, often of a fairly sophisticated sort, was carried on in British universities in the latter part of the 13th century and well into the 14th century.

Sten Ebbesen has contributed many works in the field of ancient and medieval philosophy over decades of dedicated research. His crisp and lucid style and his philosophical penetration of often difficult concepts and issues is both clear and intellectually impressive. Ashgate is proud to present this thematically arranged three volume set of his collected essays, each thoroughly revised and updated. Volume Two: Topics in Latin Philosophy from the 12th -14th Centuries explores issues in medieval philosophy from the time nominalists and other schools competed in twelfth-century Paris to the mature scholasticism of Boethius of Dacia, Radulphus Brito and other 'modist' thinkers of the late thirteenth century and, finally, the new nominalism of John Buridan in the fourteenth century.

This is an edition of an extensive Latin commentary on Aristotle's Sophistical Refutations composed about 1205 by an anonymous Parisian master who was a philosophically perceptive close reader of the Aristotelian text. The only extant manuscript of his work is now in Cambridge. This commentary is an important source of information about the development of logic at the time when the masters in Paris were beginning to organise themselves into what was to become the University of Paris.

The Dialectica Monacensis, a collection of logical treatises edited by L.M. de Rijk in 1967, has been pivotal in reconstructing the evolution of medieval logic. However, less attention has been given to the accompanying Tractatus Monacenses, preserved in the same singular manuscript. This volume presents the first complete edition of the Tractatus Monacenses and demonstrates that, while not homogeneous, the collection took its final form within the same intellectual environment as the Dialectica Monacensis. The volume argues convincingly that this environment was a German cathedral school around 1230, challenging de Rijk's earlier assertion of an English origin around 1160–1170. Additionally, the volume includes editions of three key texts integral to de Rijk's investigation into the sources of Peter of Spain’s renowned Tractatus: Quaestiunculae super Summam Ignoti, fragments of Summa Ignoti found within the Quaestiunculae, and Summulae Antiquorum. Together with an extensive introduction, these editions lay the foundation for a re-evaluation of the history of terministic logic, offering an alternative to the longstanding framework established by de Rijk.
