This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Mobile Human-Computer Interaction, Mobile HCI 2004, held in Glasgow, UK, in September 2004. The 25 revised full papers, 20 revised short papers, and 22 revised posters presented together with summaries of 7 workshops and 2 panels were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 166 submissions. The full papers are organized in topical sections on screen and power limitations; user differences and navigation; evaluation and evaluation techniques, till, touch and text entry; auditory interactions; device differences and web pages; and novel interaction techniques.

Overview The International Workshop on Haptic and Audio Interaction Design was - ganized as part of the EPSRC-funded MultiVis project. The main focus of the workshop was to investigate how the modalities of sound and haptics (touch) could be used together in interaction, and what novel interfaces could be p- vided when they are used in conjunction. What are the relative advantages of each of the modalities when used alone and together? Are there reasons why haptic-based information is moreuseful in certain situations than equivalent - dio information? How can di?erent modalities be used together to create c- pelling and useful interaction with computer-based systems? We posed these questions to researchers around the world, asking them to submit novel work which sought to discover answers. Thirty papers were submitted of which 15 were accepted. Each paper was peer reviewed at least twice using an esteemed set of leading international ?gures from both academia and industry, to whom we are grateful for the quality of their reviews, time, patience and responding within our tight schedule. Thepaperspresentedattheworkshopcomefromawidevarietyofdisciplines ranging from psychology to art, showcasing how haptics and sound can improve user interaction with computers; challenging us to move beyond simple mouse and keyboard metaphors to produce interfaces for devices and applications that allow for the full range of human interactivity. Below the papers are categorized and summarized based on their application and focus.

Haptic human-computer interaction is interaction between a human computer user and the computer user interface based on the powerful human sense of touch. Haptic hardware has been discussed and exploited for some time, particularly in the context of computer games. However, so far, little attention has been paid to the general principles of haptic HCI and the systematic use of haptic devices for improving efficiency, effectiveness, and satisfaction in HCI.This book is the first one to focus on haptic human-computer interaction. It is based on a workshop held in Glasgow, UK, in August / September 2000. The 22 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 35 submissions. Besides a brief historic survey, the book offers topical sections on haptic interfaces for blind people, collaborative haptics, psychological issues and measurement, and applications of haptics.

The5thInternationalWorkshoponHapticandAudioInteractionDesign(HAID) was held in September 2010 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Technologies to enable multimodal interaction are now mature to the point that researchis turning away from pure hardwaredevelopment, looking towards interaction and design issues to improve usability and the user experience. - bust solutions exist to display audio and haptic feedback in many forms, for instance as speech and non speech sounds and through tactile and force fe- back sensations. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the novel inter- tions supported by these modalities can provide bene?ts for all users. However, many questions remain concerning the appropriate use of haptics and audio in interaction design: how can we design e?ective haptic, audio, and multimodal interfaces? In what new application areas can we adopt these techniques? Are there design methods that are useful, or evaluation techniques that are parti- larly appropriate? HAID 2010 was a direct successor to the successful workshop series inau- rated in Glasgow in 2006, then held in Seoul in 2007, in Jyv. askyl. a in 2008, and in Dresden in 2009.The aim of HAID was to bring together researchers and practitioners who shared an interest in investigating how the haptic and audio modalitiescansynergizeinhumancomputerinteraction. Theresearchchallenges in the area are best approached through user-centred design, empirical studies, or the development of novel theoretical frameworks. A total of 21 papers were accepted for HAID 2010, each containing novel work on these human-centric topics.
