The role of individual states within the European community is one of the most important and least studied areas of European politics. The contributors to this collection apply a 'domestic policy' approach to European affairs in an attempt to shed light on the bases of British policy in the European Community. They identify and pursue three major themes: the attempts of central government to act as a gatekeeper between the British political system and the EC to protect British sovereignty; the emergence of varying speeds of adaptation to membership in different sections of government and politics; and Britain's apparent 'semi-detachment' from the mainstream of European integration. Within this framework they examine the ways in which central departments of state, local government, parliament, interest groups, political parties, and public opinion all have an influence on policy.

This is the third edition of an established textbook on Britain's role in the European Community. Britain joined the EC in 1973, over twenty years after the first of the European Communities was formed. Within a year, she had established a reputation for being at odds with major Community initiatives and for taking an independent point of view. This reputation was consolidated over the next twenty-four years. In An Awkward Partner Stephen George surveys the policies that earned Britain this reputation, recording the role successive British governments have played in the European Community. He stresses the influence both of external circumstances and domestic political considerations in shaping these policies and analyses some of the underlying political reasons for Britain's perceived awkwardness. The first edition was the first book-length survey to appear in English of British policy toward the European Community, and rapidly became established as the leading book in the field for students. In this third edition, Stephen George brings his analysis up to date, taking the story of the Major Government through to its end in the 1997 general election. This new edition will continue to be invaluable to students taking courses on the European Community, comparative European politics, and public policy.

The authors of Process Improvement and Quality Management in the Retail Industry discuss quality management through the examination of several companies that won the esteemed Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Authors George, Thomas, and Weimerskirch believe that Baldrige criteria define a management model because they provide one of the most comprehensive guides to understanding, assessing, controlling, and improving an organization for quality management. The authors also discuss many of the business-related problems of modern times, such as financial scandals, controversial social activism morale, and the impact of outsourcing to other countries. Overall, the book stresses the importance of good quality management to a company’s success.
