Life on Mars (2006-07), is one of the most talked-about television drama events of the last decade. Centring on Sam Tyler, a DI in 2006 who is inexplicably catapulted back to 1973 after an accident, the series mixes science fiction with police drama. This book charts his career from his early days as an actor to his position as executive producer and head of World Productions, focusing on the ways in which he has helped to define the role of the creative producer, shaping the distinctive politics and aesthetics of the drama he has produced, and enabling and facilitating the contributions of others. This book explores the ways in which television has engaged directly and indirectly with the new realities of the post-9/11 world.
