'The First Toast is to Peace: Travels in the South Caucasus' brings alive a captivating part of the globe that the English-speaking world has been slow to appreciate. Stephen Powell, a British journalist, travelled through remote fastnesses in Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia, and lost his heart to the Caucasus. The rugged beauty of the mountains, higher than the Alps, a strong sense of history and enduring traditions of hospitality give the region a flavour all of its own. Change came slowly to the Caucasus and in one part of Georgia the men wore chainmail armour until the 1930s. 'The First Toast is to Peace' leads the reader through these complex lands with first-hand accounts of distant trails, forays into history and conversations with local people about their hopes for the future. The narrative provides answers to questions great and small. How is Stalin regarded today in his native Georgia? How do you reach Khevsureti by horse? What is life like in Europe's forgotten war zone, Nagorno-Karabakh?

Portugal is both a celebrated and an unknown land. Millions come to enjoy its beaches and the fashionable coastal cities of Lisbon and Porto. In this sense it looms large in the minds of many. But its out-of-the-way places, its turbulent history and contemporary challenges are little-known outside of the country's boundaries. From autumn 2018 to spring 2019, British journalist Stephen Powell travelled the length of Portugal, following a zigzag path of nearly 1,500 kilometres on foot. Away from the mass tourism, he wanted to form his own unhurried impressions of this very distinctive country. He discovered a very mixed reality. The dark side was the blight of rural exodus that is emptying so many villages. But he also found a profoundly generous, warm-hearted people with time to converse - a gift that is not found everywhere.

The clichés about Mozambique spill out easily. This African country has been synonymous with war and poverty since independence from Portugal half a century ago. But is that all there is?Stephen Powell travelled the length of the country, to appreciate its beauty and find stories which dig deeper into Mozambique’s human reality. He visited the inspiring Gorongosa national park, where an international team has restored biodiversity, created jobs and provided education in a region once riven by conflict. He talked to people at the coal mining town of Moatize, where brave, articulate residents are campaigning against pollution caused by Mozambique’s biggest company. He doesn’t gloss over the central fact of war. He interviewed leading author Mia Couto about the pain of chronicling the country’s civil war, which lasted 15 years.Mozambique today comes across as a delicate mix of political stalemate and youthful vigour. There are green shoots of creativity in the land.
