GAIN A COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF NERVOUS SYSTEM FUNCTION AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO HUMAN NEUROLOGIC DISORDERS
Molecular Neuropharmacology first reviews the fundamental biochemistry of the functioning nervous system and then describes how nerve cells communicate with one another through numerous types of neurotransmitters involving amino acids, monoamines, neuropeptides, and neurotrophic factors, among several others.
The neuropharmacology and neural circuits that underlie complex behaviors as well as major neural disorders are also discussed as are the drugs used to treat those conditions. In the final section, the authors use the concepts presented in the first two sections to explainhow irregularities in the biochemistry of neuronal interactions can lead to a wide array of clinical manifestations.

There has been a revolution in our understanding of mental illness and its effect on society. The science of mental illness has made enormous strides based on the just-completed decade of the brain and is poised to make quantum progress again based on the completion of the Human Genome Project. These and other developments are covered in this new multi-volume set, which brings together in one in-depth collection the most significant recent scholarship on mental and addictive disorders. The volumes are organized to provide cutting-edge views of the epidemiology, genetics, evolutionary perspectives, and brain and behavioral science of mental illness, as well as selected papers on treatment. The papers are selected from leading journals in the US and worldwide based on their significance and on the need to provide a balanced perspective. The collection offers a comprehensive and up-to-date overview, and includes introductions that make the technical aspects of the papers accessible.

First Published in 2002. In common usage, the term "depression" can refer to the state of being sad or blue, but it also signifies a serious clinical syndrome that affects approximately 10 percent of people at some point in their lives. This clinical syndrome may occur as a primary illness or as a complication of ("secondary to") another mental disorder such as schizophrenia, a medical condition such as hypothyroidism, or the effects of a drug. Based on studies of clinical courses and outcomes, treatment responses, and familial patterns of depression, primary depressive illness is dichotomized into unipolar (depressions only) and bipolar. In bipolar disorder, or manic-depressive illness, depressions are interspersed with manias- periods of elevated mood, high energy, and lack of sleep. Bipolar disorder is described in a separate volume.
