Surrealist Art and Thought in the 1930s examines the intersection of Hegelian aesthetics, experimental art and poetry, Marxism and psychoanalysis in the theory and practice of the Surrealist movement. Locating Surrealist art and thought between modernist art and revolutionary politics, Steven Harris investigates the consequences of the Surrealists' efforts to synthesize these diverse concerns, through the invention, in 1931, of the object and in the recasting of their activities as a mode of revolutionary science. Providing a context for the cultural and political debates in France and the Soviet Union during the 1930s, he also analyzes the debate on proletarian literature, the Surrealists' reaction to the Popular Front, and their eventual defense of an experimental modern art following their break with the French Communist Party in 1935.

Global power structures are changing. The United States and Europe are losing ground, as countries such as China and India increase their global reach. At the same time that new global players emerge, multinational corporations, global civil society organizations, and international media carve out their own spaces in international affairs. How will these changes impact the legitimacy of the United Nations? In Shared Responsibility, Carsten Staur examines the ability of the UN to combine its normative functions - defining global objectives, rules, and standards - with practical assistance for its 193 member states. Staur focuses on transformative global challenges, where the UN has the potential to play a critical role in assisting vulnerable countries in the aftermath of conflict, in further developing the concept of "responsibility to protect," in creating a more forceful system of accountability for mass atrocity crimes, and in re-launching sustainable development as the future's principal global development approach and as the basis for dealing effectively with both climate change and the responsible management of global resources. An insider's look at the UN, Shared Responsibility details the problems faced by the United Nations and presents solutions for the organization to remain relevant, legitimate, and action-oriented in the twenty-first century.

Originally ‘pianoforte’ (or sometimes fortepiano), but fairly swiftly becoming simply the piano, this fascinating instrument was invented nearly two centuries before the first motor car was manufactured. Just like the cars that followed Mr Benz’s first invention, the piano developed into an amazing machine with over 12,000 moving parts. Despite the digital world we now live in and people all too frequently being glued to screens and phones, the piano – whether in the private home, studio or concert hall – is still here and adored by millions. Largely made from bits of wood, wire, felt, metal and plastic, in the right hands this much-loved instrument can enchant its listeners and move people to both tears and wonderful exhilaration. The piano has proved to be a remarkable survivor, and this book explores its beauty, significance and enduring legacy.

Surrealism is one of the most influential and popular art forms of the last century. It has shaped painting, literature, film, photography, music, theatre, architecture, fashion and design, as well as thinking about politics and culture. The Encyclopedia presents the first comprehensive and systematic overview of surrealism internationally, from its beginnings to the present day.Volume 1 includes overviews of national surrealist movements, surrealism’s influence across the visual, applied and performing arts, and analyses of the concepts which underpin surrealism. Volumes 2 and 3 present an A-Z of both the significant and the lesser-known individuals - theorists, critics, novelists, poets, playwrights, screenwriters, designers, painters, collagists, object makers, sculptors, film makers, and photographers – who have made and continue to make surrealism. The volume concludes with a detailed overview of contemporary surrealist practice.
