This edition of over 600 letters written by or for the poor in the early nineteenth-century Cumbrian town of Kirkby Lonsdale provides a unique window onto the experiences, views and conditions of a much-neglected group in English society. At the most human level, these letters are replete with sickness and suffering, the inability of mothers and fathers to fulfil their basic roles, claims that people were starving and naked, writers who were at death's door and those who were homeless and desperate. The letters also provide a sense of the emotional landscape of those who have largely escaped the attention of historians of emotion. Here we find anger, suffering, gratitude, hopelessness, fear, humiliation and humility, largely in the words and voice of those who experienced such emotions. And above all we find agency - a group of poor people and their advocates who were willing and able, indeed saw it as their right, to challenge those who administered welfare and attempt to shape a system which notionally at least afforded them no power. Here, then, are ordinary lives played out on a canvas that will be appealing to a wide readership.

Following the passage of the 1834 New Poor Law, parishes in England and Wales were organized into unions, each of which had at least one workhouse, a public institution where impoverished individuals and families were housed, fed, and put to work. Beyond bricks and regulations, the workhouse was shaped and animated by those who ran it. Workhouse Lives reconstructs the careers and experiences of workhouse staff: masters and matrons, nurses, schoolmasters, porters, chaplains, taskmasters, relieving officers, and inspectors.In the workhouse, roles overlapped, lines of responsibility blurred, and power was constantly negotiated. As the functions of the welfare state expanded, staff were expected to manage dormitories and medical wards, teach children and offer spiritual guidance, resolve disputes, keep records, administer vaccinations, arrange foster placements, and conduct sanitary inspections. Violence was a regular feature of workhouse life, arising from clashes between staff and inmates, conflicts among inmates (including domestic violence), and staff disputes. Officers might abuse their authority, sometimes brutally, while others acted with care and compassion. What moulded the lives of everyone within the workhouse was less the administrative structure than the character of the person appointed to each role. This dynamic continues to resonate in modern welfare systems, which, however bureaucratized, are embodied by the people working on the front lines.Touching on histories of welfare, labour, poverty, literacy, material culture, and state formation, Workhouse Lives illuminates the personalities, motivations, and community connections of staff whose lives have long been hidden.

This volume is concerned with the public and private lunatics asylums of England in the long nineteenth century, focusing on transcriptions of unusual and difficult-to-access primary source materials. The Introduction to the volume deals broadly with the state of the literature in the field and details the complex primary materials. Our sources include letters written by or about the 'mad poor' as they were circulated between homes, workhouses, private and public asylums and domestic dwellings; the administrative records of local bodies which decided who ended up in asylums and who did not, including a unique set of certificates formally committing people to asylums; family letters; private asylum inspection records; under-utilised pauper lunatic asylum patient records inclusive of admission and post-mortem documents; and, material from management that lifts the veil on everyday life within asylums. We have transcribed these sources faithful to the original, with all of their misspellings, orthographic variation and emendations, providing a unique resource for those interested in the histories of people with mental illnesses, institutional cultures, literacy and cultures of community care.
