There is a considerable amount of interest within pediatrics and pri­ mary health care that is currently being directed toward the behavioral and emotional problems of childhood. Traditionally, these areas have been emphasized by child psychiatrists, child psychologists, and psy­ chiatric social workers. Now, however, the detection and, in some cases, the assessment and treatment of children with these types of disturb­ ances fall within the province of primary child health care profession­ als. Even when the child psychiatrist or child psychologist provides the primary mental health treatment for the child, specialists such as pediatricians, family physicians, pediatric nurses, pediatric nurse prac­ titioners, and speech therapists remain instrumental in support of the ongoing psychotherapeutic process as providers of some other aspect of total health care to the child and family. For these pediatricians, family physicians, and other nonpsychol­ ogist primary health care providers, it is essential to acquire an under­ standing and effective working knowledge of important psychological information and concepts to utilize within their own framework and professional responsibilities. In order that this may be accomplished, these professionals with limited backgrounds in psychology must better understand how psychologists themselves assess children and how they derive the conclusions reflected in the statements and reports that are shared with members of their own and other disciplines. In short, nonpsychologists must become substantially more familiar with psy­ chological assessment, particularly with psychological testing and the subsequent reporting of results.

Residential and inpatient treatment of children and adolescents is a field that is still in the process of defining itself and of demonstrating its effectiveness. No other interventions can bring about the major changes in all aspects of a child's environment that inpatient hospitalization or residential treatment can.

Health and mental health organizations are undergoing major changes in policies, procedures, structures, and emphasis. Many of these changes appear related to what may be termed the managed care revolution. This upheaval in delivery systems related to health and mental health care has been associated with great changes and rapid turnover in leaders and in leadership positions. It appears that many leaders are not able to lead their organizations into this or other new territories. The purpose of this book is to describe stages that organizations go through as they move rapidly to adapt to new and sometimes unwanted changes. The emphasis is on the aspects of leaders and of leadership that appear tied to successful or unsuccessful outcomes for organizations in the midst of these rapid changes. Particular challenges and expectations that are likely to be present in organizations and in individuals facing change are described. Methods are presented that might be employed by leaders to confront various difficulties in order to direct successful outcomes for themselves, as leaders, and for their organizations. Throughout the book, the essential and sometimes differing goals of leaders as individuals and of leadership as a professional process are highlighted. Jack London was the best known and probably the most widely read American author at the turn of the 20th century. London was interested in the issues of who humans are in relation to one another, to other species, and to life itself. Much of Londons life and writing can be viewed from psychological perspectives as an exploration of the issue of meaning in life generally and as a quest for meaning in his own life.C. G. Jung was an early psychoanalyst who broke from Freud and established his own school of analytical psychology. Jung was himself intensely concerned with the issue of meaning. For Jung, the decisive question for man is: Is he related to something infinite or not? (page 325). Jack London certainly would have agreed with the crucial nature of this question. In Jack London: A Man in Search of Meaning. Jungian Perspectives, the author uses the prism of analytical psychology to examine Londons life and quest for meaning from deeply psychological and archetypal perspectives that are revealed in Londons writings, both fictional and nonfictional. The book begins with a brief biographical sketch and personality description of Jack London. This is followed by a focus on the question of meaning in his life. The next chapter addresses the issue of meaning from the perspective of analytical psychology (Jung). Selected fiction from three periods in Londons career is considered analytically in subsequent chapters. These periods are his early adult, middle and last years. The discussion of each work of fiction is preceded by a brief biographical statement of events in Londons life at the time of the writing and a brief review of the narrative. A concluding chapter summarizes Londons quest for meaning and where it might have led him from the perspectives of analytical psychology if he had lived beyond his untimely death at 40 years of age. There are two appendices. One contains a longer biographical statement (Appendix A). The second (Appendix B) provides longer, more detailed summaries of the works that are discussed. Because of the continuous nature of the field''s development, it is especially important that a broad range of its theoretical orientations and therapeutic techniques be considered and critically appraised. Residential and inpatient treatment is unique in its potential for both positive and negative outcomes. No other interventions can bring about the major changes in all aspects of a child''s environment that inpatient hospitalization or residential treatment can. These changes may result in rapid and significant improvements in a child''s condition, or they may conceivably lead to additional maladaptive behavioral patterns or inappropriate emotional and cognitive responses. Therefore, the obligation to consider the entire range of treatment alterna­ tives and to empirically determine the effectiveness of specific interventions is particularly great. Residential and inpatient treatment is also an expensive and limited resource, and our wise utilization of it should be guided by a comprehensive understanding of its benefits and limitations.

This book discusses psychological aspects of dehumanization and of the human tendency to dominate, control and potentially murder those considered less than or “other” by the dominant group. It explores how increasingly severe dehumanization resulted in the genocide of six million Jews in the second World War. Psychological and behavioral strategies Nazi aggressors and ordinary citizens used to mislead themselves during this process are described. Understanding the sequence of events from dehumanization to murder has implications for the apparent tendency of human beings to harm and potentially kill those who appear “different”, or who are made into the “other”. Efforts to prevent genocide should actively challenge dehumanization of weaker populations whenever possible, even when dehumanization appears mild, “insignificant,” or “innocuous.”
