These proceedings contain the papers selected for presentation at the 23rd Inter- tional Information Security Conference (SEC 2008), co-located with IFIP World Computer Congress (WCC 2008), September 8–10, 2008 in Milan, Italy. In - sponse to the call for papers, 143 papers were submitted to the conference. All - pers were evaluated on the basis of their signi?cance, novelty,and technical quality, and reviewed by at least three members of the program committee. Reviewing was blind meaning that the authors were not told which committee members reviewed which papers. The program committee meeting was held electronically, holding - tensive discussion over a period of three weeks. Of the papers submitted, 42 full papers and 11 short papers were selected for presentation at the conference. A conference like this just does not happen; it depends on the volunteer efforts of a host of individuals. There is a long list of people who volunteered their time and energy to put together the conference and who deserve acknowledgment. We thank all members of the program committee and the external reviewers for their hard work in the paper evaluation. Due to the large number of submissions, p- gram committee members were required to complete their reviews in a short time frame. We are especially thankful to them for the commitment they showed with their active participation in the electronic discussion.

Database security is one of the classical topics in the research of information system security. Ever since the early years of database management systems, a great deal of research activity has been conducted. Fruitful results have been produced, many of which are widely adopted in commercial and military database management systems. In recent years, the research scope of database security has been greatly expanded due to the rapid development of the global internetworked infrastructure. Databases are no longer stand-alone systems that are only accessible to internal users of - ganizations. Instead, allowing selective access from different security domains has become a must for many business practices. Information Hiding: Steganography and Watermarking - Attacks and Countermeasures deals with information hiding. With the proliferation of multimedia on the Internet, information hiding addresses two areas of concern: privacy of information from surveillance (steganography) and protection of intellectual property (digital watermarking). Steganography (literally, covered writing) explores methods to hide the existence of hidden messages. These methods include invisible ink, microdot, digital signature, covert channel, and spread spectrum communication. Digital watermarks represent a commercial application of steganography. Watermarks can be used to track the copyright and ownership of electronic media. In this volume, the authors focus on techniques for hiding information in digital media. They analyze the hiding techniques to uncover their limitations. These limitations are employed to devise attacks against hidden information. The goal of these attacks is to expose the existence of a secret message or render a digital watermark unusable. In assessing these attacks, countermeasures are developed to assist in protecting digital watermarking systems. Understanding the limitations of the current methods will lead us to build more robust methods that can survive various manipulation and attacks. The more information that is placed in the public's reach on the Internet, the more owners of such information need to protect themselves from theft and false representation. Systems to analyze techniques for uncovering hidden information and recover seemingly destroyed information will be useful to law enforcement authorities in computer forensics and digital traffic analysis. Information security concerns the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information processed by a computer system. With an emphasis on prevention, traditional information security research has focused little on the ability to survive successful attacks, which can seriously impair the integrity and availability of a system. This text uses database trusted recovery, as an example, to illustrate the principles of trusted recovery in defensive information warfare. Traditional database recovery mechanisms do not address trusted recovery, except for complete rollbacks, which undo the work of benign transactions as well as malicious ones, and compensating transactions, whose utility depends on application semantics. Database trusted recovery faces a set of unique challenges. In particular, trusted database recovery is complicated mainly by the presence of benign transactions that depend, directly or indirectly on malicious transactions and the requirement by many mission-critical database applications that trusted recovery should be done on-the-fly without blocking the execution of new user transactions.This book proposes an alternative model and a set of innovative algorithms for database trusted recovery. Both read-write dependency-based and semantics-based trusted recovery algorithms are proposed, together with static and dynamic database trusted recovery algorithms. These algorithms can typically save a lot of work by innocent users and can satisfy a variety of attack recovery requirements of real world database applications.

Information security is receiving a great deal of attention as computers increasingly process more and more sensitive information. A multilevel secure database management system (MLS DBMS) is designed to store, retrieve and process information in compliance with certain mandatory security requirements, essential for protecting sensitive information from unauthorized access, modification and abuse. Intrusion detection systems (IDS) are usually deployed along with other preventive security mechanisms, such as access control and authentication, as a second line of defense that protects information systems. Intrusion detection complements the protective mechanisms to improve the system security. Moreover, even if the preventive security mechanisms can protect information systems successfully, it is still desirable to know what intrusions have happened or are happening, so that the users can understand the security threats and risks and thus be better prepared for future attacks. Intrusion detection techniques are traditionally categorized into two classes: anomaly detection and misuse detection. Anomaly detection is based on the normal behavior of a subject (a user or a system); any action that significantly deviates from the normal behaviour is considered intrusive. Misuse detection catches intrusions in terms of characteristics of known attacks or system vulnerabilities; any action that conforms to the pattern of known attack or vulnerability is considered intrusive.Alternatively, IDS may be classified into host-based IDSs, distributed IDSs, and network based IDSs according to the source of the audit information used by each IDS. Host-based IDSs get audit data from host audit trails and usually aim at detecting attacks against a single host; distributed IDSs gather audit data from multiple hosts and possibly the network and connects the hosts, aiming at detecting attacks involving multiple hosts; network-based IDSs use network traffic as the audit data source, relieving the burden on the hosts that usually provide normal computing services. Intrusion Detection In Distributed Systems: An Abstraction-Based Approach presents research contributions in three areas with respect to intrusion detection in distributed systems. The first contribution is an abstraction-based approach to addressing heterogeneity and autonomy of distributed environments. The second contribution is a formal framework for modelling requests among co-operative IDSs and its application to Common Intrusion Detection Framework (CIDF). The third contribution is a novel approach to coordinating different IDSs for distributed event correlation.

This workshop is a follow-up of three issues of the World Conference on Information Security Education (WISE) that were also organized by WG 11. 8. The first WISE was organized by Louise Yngstrom in 1999 in Stockholm, and the next one, WISE’4, will be held in Moscow, Russia, 18-20 May 2005. This year, the workshop is aimed at developing a first draft of an international doctorate program allowing a specialization in IT Security.

Matt Warren, from Deakin University, Australia, who is the current Chair of WG 11. 1, acted as the Program Chair. The second workshop is organized by the IFIP WG 11. 8, dedicated to Information Security Education. This workshop is a follow-up of three issues of the World Conference on Information Security Education (WISE) that were also organized by WG 11. 8. The first WISE was organized by Louise Yngstrom in 1999 in Stockholm, and the next one, WISE’4, will be held in Moscow, Russia, 18-20 May 2005. This year, the workshop is aimed at developing a first draft of an international doctorate program allowing a specialization in IT Security.

Motivation for the Book This book seeks to establish the state of the art in the cyber situational awareness area and to set the course for future research. A multidisciplinary group of leading researchers from cyber security, cognitive science, and decision science areas elab orate on the fundamental challenges facing the research community and identify promising solution paths. Today, when a security incident occurs, the top three questions security admin istrators would ask are in essence: What has happened? Why did it happen? What should I do? Answers to the ?rst two questions form the core of Cyber Situational Awareness. Whether the last question can be satisfactorily answered is greatly de pendent upon the cyber situational awareness capability of an enterprise. A variety of computer and network security research topics (especially some sys tems security topics) belong to or touch the scope of Cyber Situational Awareness. However, the Cyber Situational Awareness capability of an enterprise is still very limited for several reasons: • Inaccurate and incomplete vulnerability analysis, intrusion detection, and foren sics. • Lack of capability to monitor certain microscopic system/attack behavior. • Limited capability to transform/fuse/distill information into cyber intelligence. • Limited capability to handle uncertainty. • Existing system designs are not very “friendly” to Cyber Situational Awareness.

These proceedings contain the papers selected for presentation at the 23rd Inter- tional Information Security Conference (SEC 2008), co-located with IFIP World Computer Congress (WCC 2008), September 8–10, 2008 in Milan, Italy. In - sponse to the call for papers, 143 papers were submitted to the conference. All - pers were evaluated on the basis of their signi?cance, novelty,and technical quality, and reviewed by at least three members of the program committee. Reviewing was blind meaning that the authors were not told which committee members reviewed which papers. The program committee meeting was held electronically, holding - tensive discussion over a period of three weeks. Of the papers submitted, 42 full papers and 11 short papers were selected for presentation at the conference. A conference like this just does not happen; it depends on the volunteer efforts of a host of individuals. There is a long list of people who volunteered their time and energy to put together the conference and who deserve acknowledgment. We thank all members of the program committee and the external reviewers for their hard work in the paper evaluation. Due to the large number of submissions, p- gram committee members were required to complete their reviews in a short time frame. We are especially thankful to them for the commitment they showed with their active participation in the electronic discussion.

Preserving Privacy for On-Line Analytical Processing addresses the privacy issue of On-Line Analytic Processing (OLAP) systems. OLAP systems usually need to meet two conflicting goals. First, the sensitive data stored in underlying data warehouses must be kept secret. Second, analytical queries about the data must be allowed for decision support purposes. The main challenge is that sensitive data can be inferred from answers to seemingly innocent aggregations of the data. Motivation for the book Database security has been gaining a great deal of importance as industry, military, and government organizations have increasingly adopted Internet-based techno- gies on a large-scale, because of convenience, ease of use, and the ability to take advantage of rapid advances in the commercial market. Along with the traditional security aspects of data integrity and availability, there is an increasing interest in research and development in data privacy. This is because today’s often missi- critical databases no longer contain only data used for day-to-day processing by organization; as new applications are being added, it is possible for organizations to collect and store vast amounts of data quickly and ef ciently and to make the data readily accessible to the public, typically through Web-based applications. Unfor- nately, if security threats related to the integrity, availability, and privacy of the data are not properly resolved, databases remain vulnerable to malicious attacks and - cidental misuse. Such incidents, in turn, may translate into nancial losses or losses whose values are obviously high but dif cult to quantify, e. g. , the loss of the public’s trust in the data management infrastructure and services offered by an organization. In assembling this handbook, we have had a twofold objective: rst, to provide a comprehensive summary of the results of research and development activities in various aspects of database security up to this point, and second, to point toward directions for future work in this important and fruitful eld of research.
