David Ricardo’s theories were introduced in fragments in Japan after the Meiji restoration of 1868 and his work came into prominence late in comparison to other major thinkers figuring in the history of economic thought. The book seeks to analyse the studies in Japan from the year 1920 to the end of the 1930s – during the time before the outbreak of the Second World War, when even the study of classical economics became difficult. The book covers different aspects of his works and contains elements which may be interesting to foreign and even Japanese readers today without necessarily coming under the influence of Marx’s reading. It presents works on Ricardo that are at present, wholly unknown to the Ricardo scholars and more generally to the historians of economic thought outside Japan. This book is an essential read on the history of economic thought in Japan.

David Ricardo, one of the major figures in the history of economic thought, particularly in the English classical political economy, deployed his activities as economist just two hundreds of years ago. Since then his economics has been generally estimated as the culminating point of the classical economics, and his name and theory has been exerting an enduring influence up to the present. This book, consisting of articles contributed by historians economic thought on money and finance, intends to reappraise the Ricardo’s monetary and financial thought on the occasion of its bicentenary and to offer historical clues to understanding today’s world wide financial crisis.The book consists of eight chapters divided into three parts. The first part is devoted to the historical back ground of Ricardo’s thought (Hume, Smith, Thornton etc). It serves to bring in relief the originality of Ricardo’s thought in the historical context. The second and central part consists of four chapters discussing the most important aspects of Ricardo’s monetary thought: Ricardo and quantity theory of money, the ideal monetary regime conceived by Ricardo very early in his career and matured till the last moment of his life, plan for the establishment of a national bank. In this part, the relation between the quantity of money and its value in Ricardo’s theory is examined in a new light and Ricardo as a non-quantity theorist. The two chapters in the third and last part discuss the problems raised after Ricardo in relation to his monetary thought. Tracing Ricardo's economic thought to the early 19th century, this book may provide readers insight to help them understand the present day financial crises through his works.

This book is a renovative research work on Ricardo’s theory of value and of money, achieved through analysis of Ricardo’s original writings, made available in Sraffa’s Works.Takenaga argues that Ricardo’s economic theory should be understood as a cost theory of value. He begins by re-reading the first chapter of Ricardo’s Principles, focusing on the chapter’s theoretical structure and definition of labour. He then extends Ricardo’s characterisation of the theory of value by situating it in the context of debates with other contemporary economists, namely Torrens and McCulloch. In the third chapter, he argues that Ricardo’s theory of money is not a quantity theory, and according to him the causal relation between money’s value and its quantity runs from the former to the latter. In the fourth and fifth chapters, he discusses Ricardo’s plans to reform the English monetary regime of his time. This book is an English translation of Essays on Marx’s Theory of Value, first published by Isaak Illich Rubin in 1923 in theSoviet Union. Rubin’s book sparked a fierce value controversy with contemporary Soviet economists during the late 1920s. As such, the present translation is conceived as a variorum edition, including for the first time in English all the essential supplementary materials related to this foundational work in Marx’s value theory. In addition to Rubin’s main work, this edition includes his four most important related publications, as well as ten debate articles written and published by his contemporary proponents and opponents.
