Varias décadas después de su aparición, el ensayo de T. H. Marshall Ciudadanía y clase social (1950) es ya un clásico de las ciencias sociales de pleno derecho. Su lúcido análisis de los principales elementos de la ciudadanía -la posesión de derechos civiles, políticos y sociales- sigue siendo hoy tan válido como entonces y, de forma más o menos solapada o expresa, sigue estando en el centro de los modernos debates de sociología y política social, máxime con las actuales tendencias al desmantelamiento del "estado del bienestar".
