Integrated Systems Analysis of Ecosystems: The Land, Water, Food, and Climate Nexus focuses on the interface between soil sciences, hydrology, economy, ecology, agronomy, and environmental sciences. The book cuts across disciplinary boundaries and addresses broad issues impacting soil, water, food, and energy security, as well as the operation of agricultural and ecological processes. It will summarize important advances in cutting-edge models in ecology and agro-ecology, including biophysical process-oriented models and land use integrated models, along with their implications at various spatiotemporal scales.Summarizes important advances in cutting-edge models in ecology and agro-ecology and their implications at various spatiotemporal scalesIncludes important perspectives to promote the development of multidisciplinary integrated modeling platforms, elucidating the interacting laws of physics and economic/ecological principles and linking resources (land and water), food, energy, and climate at their nexusFocuses on the water-food-energy nexus and related ecological research using a systems analytical approach and applicationsProvides vital information to support policymakers and improve decision-making

Whilst all of the major industrialized countries are currently experiencing population ageing, Japan is at the forefront of this demographic trend. This important new book explores the serious economic and social challenges that a rapidly ageing Japanese economy will have to overcome in the first half of the 21st century. Following a comprehensive review of the economics of ageing both in general and in Japan, the authors present a range of future scenarios produced using an integrated economic-demographic model. This unique model integrates demography and the macro-economy, paying special attention to pensions, health care, and long-term care. The results reveal that, even if future demographic trends are more favourable than predicted, Japan will still experience a slowdown of economic growth, reduced savings, and rising costs of pensions, health care and long-term care. However, with appropriate policy measures and rapid implementation, the authors believe that a situation in which both young and old continue to experience long-term improvements in well-being remains possible. This book is arguably the best available English language survey on the economic implications of population trends in Japan. It will be widely read by researchers of economics, demography, public policy and public finance, and will also provide useful supplemental reading for graduate or upper undergraduate courses in economics, social policy, and Asian studies.

Efficient and equitable policies for managing disaster risks and adapting to global environmental change are critically dependent on development of robust options supported by integrated modeling. The book is based on research and state-of-the art models developed at IIASA (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis) and within its cooperation network. It addresses the methodological complexities of assessing disaster risks, which call for stochastic simulation, optimization methods and economic modeling. Furthermore, it describes policy frameworks for integrated disaster risk management, including stakeholder participation facilitated by user-interactive decision-support tools. Applications and results are presented for a number of case studies at different problem scales and in different socio-economic contexts, and their implications for loss sharing policies and economic development are discussed. Among others, the book presents studies for insurance policies for earthquakes in the Tuscany region in Italy and flood risk in the Tisza river basin in Hungary. Further, it investigates the economic impact of natural disasters on development and possible financial coping strategies; and applications are shown for selected South Asian countries. The book is addressed both to researchers and to organizations involved with catastrophe risk management and risk mitigation policies.
