Economics, in the modern sense of the word, was introduced into Japan in the second half of the nineteenth century. However, Japanese thinkers had already developed, during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, a variety of interesting approaches to issues such as the causes of inflation, the value of trade, and the role of the state in economic activity. Tessa Morris-Suzuki provides the first comprehensive English language survey of the development of economic thought in Japan. She considers how the study of neo-classical and Keynesian economics was given new impetus by Japan's 'economic miracle' while Marxist thought, particularly well established in Japan, was developing along lines that are only now beginning to be recognized by the West. She concludes with an examination of the radical rethinking of fundamental economic theory currently occuring in Japan and outlines some of the exciting new approaches which are emerging from this 'shaking of the foundations.

East Asia is now the world’s economic powerhouse, but ghosts of history continue to trouble relations between the key countries of the region, particularly between Japan, China and the two Koreas. Unhappy legacies of Japan’s military expansion in pre-war Asia prompt on-going calls for apologies, while conflicts over ownership of cultural heritage cause friction between China and Korea, and no peace treaty has ever been signed to conclude the Korean War. For over a decade, the region’s governments and non-government groups have sought to confront the ghosts of the past by developing paths to reconciliation. Focusing particularly on popular culture and grassroots action, East Asia beyond the History Wars explores these East Asian approaches to historical reconciliation. This book examines how Korean historians from North and South exchange ideas about national history, how Chinese film-makers reframe their views of the war with Japan, and how Japanese social activists develop grassroots reconciliation projects with counterparts from Korea and elsewhere. As the volume’s studies of museums, monuments and memorials show, East Asian public images of modern history are changing, but change is fragile and uncertain. This unfinished story of East Asia’s search for historical reconciliation has important implications for the study of popular memory worldwide.Presenting a fresh perspective on reconciliation which draws on both history and cultural studies, this book will be welcomed by students and scholars working in the fields of Asian history, Asian culture and society as well as those interested in war and memory studies more generally.

In a life that spanned more than a century - 1882 to 1989 - Monte Punshon witnessed crucial events in Australia's history. She was a pioneer radio broadcaster, travelled the country with children's theatrical troupes and defied convention with her active involvement in the underground world of queer Melbourne in the 1930s. Twins Charles Maurice Detmold (1883-1908) and Edward Julius Detmold (1883-1957) were among the most extraordinary, enigmatic and tragic figures in early twentieth-century British art. In unravelling the mysteries of their lives, this book re-examines themes of art and war, orientalism and the human relationship with nature.By the time they entered their teens, the Detmold twins were widely recognised as artistic geniuses. They worked together on acclaimed etchings and on illustrations to Kipling’s Jungle Book, but at the height of their fame, and while still in his early twenties, Charles Maurice Detmold inexplicably committed suicide, leaving only a couple of strange sentences as clues to the reason for his death. Edward Detmold went on to become a central figure in the golden age of book illustration, famous particularly for his nature paintings and for the images he created to accompany Hodder and Stoughton’s exquisite 1924 edition of The Arabian Nights.
