This book provides a comprehensive survey on related work for radio link quality estimation, which covers the characteristics of low-power links, the fundamental concepts of link quality estimation in wireless sensor networks, a taxonomy of existing link quality estimators and their performance analysis. It then shows how link quality estimation can be used for designing protocols and mechanisms such as routing and hand-off. The final part is dedicated to radio interference estimation, generation and mitigation.

This volume contains the proceedings of EWSN 2007, the fourth European c- ference on Wireless Sensor Networks. The conference took place at TU Delft, January 29–31, 2007. Its objective was to provide a forum where researchers with di?erent experience and background, from hardware to applications, would presentanddiscussthelatestdevelopmentsintheexciting?eldofwirelesssensor networks. Since the interest in sensor networks has been rapidly expanding, it was no surprise that EWSN received a record number of 164 submissions, of which 22paperswereselectedforthe?nalconference.Itwasapleasuretoobservethat, although based in Europe, the conference serves as a truly international forum with submissions originating from all ?ve continents: 35% from Europe, 35% from Asia, 26% from America, 3% from Australia, and 1% from Africa. The - lectionprocessinvolvedmorethan500reviewswithmostpapersbeingevaluated by at least three reviewers. The ?nal program covered a wide range of topics, grouped into seven sessions: networking, tracking, algorithms, applications and support, medium access control, OS and tools, and localization. In addition to the papers published in these proceedings, the conference also included a poster and demonstration session, of which separate proceedings are available. Tutorials and keynotes complemented the program, together making for a truly interesting conference. In closing, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to EWSN 2007. In particular, the members of the Program C- mittee and external reviewers responsible for the strong technical program, the local TU Delft people for streamlining the conference logistics, and Springer for their excellent cooperation in putting these proceedings together.

Welcome to the proceedings of REALWSN 2010, the 4th Workshop on Real- World Wireless Sensor Networks! After threemeetings in Europewedecided to holdREALWSN in exciting Sri Lanka. We want to thank the local organizers as well as the authors, attendees and members of the technical ProgramCommittee, Demo and Poster Chairs for making this event possible. As the name of the workshop suggests, REALWSN is a forum for people interested in real-world issues in the fascinating research area of wireless sensor networks.Despite many yearsofresearchthe deploymentof realsensornetworks isstillachallengingtask.Thebehaviorofrealdeployednetworksdi?erssubst- tially from the behavior of the same network in a simulator. The main objective of REALWSN is to bring together researchers and practitioners to understand these di?erences and boost the state of the art in this exciting ?eld. This year the program consisted of 11 full papers and ?ve short papers ca- fullyselectedfromover34submissions.SinceREALWSN2010wasastand-alone two-day event, the attendees could also look forward to a poster and demo s- sion with more than 10 contributions. The technical program covered topics from low-level communication and software development to a variety of re- worldsensor networkapplications, some of them tailoredto Asian wildlife which we think is particularly interesting. Thanks again to all people who contributed to the workshop: the Technical ProgramCommittee, thedemoandposterchairsKameswariChebroluandAdam Dunkels, the Publication Chair Luca Mottola and our sponsors that include the UniversityofColombo, theUppsalaVINNExcellenceCenterforWirelessSensor NetworksWISENET,InterBlocksLtd.andtheSustainableComputingResearch Group at the University of Colombo. The local Organizing Committee provided tremendous help that made REALWSN possible.
