This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed postproceedings of the Third International Workshop on Innovative Internet Community Systems, IICS 2003, held in Leipzig, Germany in June 2003.The 19 revised full papers presented together with 2 invited papers have gone through two rounds of reviewing and improvement and were selected from more than 30 submissions. Among the topics addressed are semantic search, network communities, e-learning, message-oriented middleware, networked information spaces, mobile business processes, distributed communication systems, distributed Web applications, semantic Web environments, file-sharing systems, network intrusion detection, protocols, self-organizing networks, XML, and linguistic knowledge services.

IICS2004,thefourthworkshoponInnovativeInternetCommunitySystems,s- cessfully dealtwith severaltimely topicsofdistributed systems,the Internetand virtualcommunities.TheworkshopseriescommencedwithIICS2001heldatthe Technical University of Ilmenau. After two more workshops, in Kuhlung .. sborn and Leipzig, this year was the ?rst time that the workshop was held abroad (Guadalajara, Mexico). Due to a broader international environment, the wo- shop this year was organized by the IEEE in cooperation with the Universidad de Guadalajara. Thepapersfromtheconferenceweremainlyfocusedonthreeaspects:syst- orientedproblems,textprocessing,andtheoreticalfoundationofdistributedand Internet systems. The organizers tried to cover the main issues appearing today with the steady growth of the Internet and the Internet communities. Con- quently, the speed and quality-of-service problems of today's Internet protocols, aspects of cooperation and collaboration in Internet systems, as well as age- and textprocessing-based methods used to compute the large amounts of inf- mation in the Internet more or less automatically were all emphasized in most papers and discussions during the conference.Thereweretwomini-workshopsintheworkshopbecausesometopicsmay- ?uence communities and the Internet, and the other way around. Armin Mikler from the University of North Texas at Denton organized the workshop on Computational Epidemiology, considering several aspects of this brand new research area which requires fast exchanges of information from large areas. Helena Unger organized a mini-workshop on the Optimization of Urban Tra?c Systems (OUTS), showing the strong connection between social communities and technical systems, and many requirements to use distributed systems and the Net to collect and process current information in the right manner.

This volume of Lecture Notes in Computer Science contains all accepted papers th of the 5 International Conference on Innovative Internet Community Systems 2 (I CS), which was held at the Sorbonne in Paris, from June 20–22, 2005. The previous four conferences in Ilmenau, Rostock, Leipzig (Germany) and Guadalajara (Mexico) developed the pro?le of this event. Traditionally, there are topics discussed in three main aspects. All of them must be considered in a united manner in order to investigate and understand the emergence and evolution of communities in the Internet: knowledge about networking, content and text processing as well as theory. The goal of the I2CS workshop is to bring researchers from both industry and academic ?elds together to discuss current progressandfuturedevelopmentsintheseareasandtoeliminatethegapbetween theory and application. At this point, we want to express immense gratitude to all the authors of the submitted papers and to the members of the international Program Committee for their contribution to the success of the event and a program of high quality. In a peer-to-peer review process, 17 papers were selected out of 27 submissions.

It brought - gether scientists whose research addressed di?erent aspects of Internet-based and network-centric computing. This year's workshop was held in the inspiring atmosphereoftheoldBalticSearesortofKuhlung .. bornnearRostock(Germany). Theunprecedentedpervasivenessofnetworkaccessandtheassociatedem- gence of large distributed computing infrastructures have presented researchers with new challenges in Information and Web technology. The management and retrieval of web-based information, the classi?cation of contents, and the m- agementofweb-basedcommunitiesaresomeofthekeyareasaddressedbysome of this year's contributions. Other papers focus on the structure and retrieval ofinformationfrom largedistributed data basesaswell asthe representationof the distributed natureofinformationbythe meansofgraph-theoreticalmodels. 2 Like I CS 2001, this year's workshop was organized by the Gesellschaft fur ..Informatik(GI)inGermanytosupporttheexchangeofexperiences,results, and technology in the ?eld. The 21 papers (2 invited, 19 regular contributions) presented at the conference and in the present volume were selected from more than30submissions.Everysubmissionwascarefullyreviewedbythreemembers of the programcommittee.
