Die Bettelmönche strebten danach, die in einem starken Wandel befindliche Gesellschaft des späteren Mittelalters zu reglementieren. Dies geschah durch die Kombination scheinbar widersprüchlicher Entwicklungen: der Verchristlichung individueller Freiheiten bei gleichzeitiger Etablierung neuartiger Kontrollmechanismen. So verkörpert das exemplarisch dargestellte Wirken der frühen deutschen Franziskaner die Dialektik gesellschaftlicher Diversifizierungsprozesse, welches Europa nicht nur im Mittelalter prägte.

In both world regions a plurality of languages, religions, and types of belonging by birth was in premodern times matched by a plurality of legal systems and practices. This volume describes case-by-case the points where law and social diversity intersected.
