With the increasing need to take an holistic view of landslide hazard and risk, this book overviews the concept of risk research and addresses the sociological and psychological issues resulting from landslides. Its integrated approach offers understanding and ability for concerned organisations, landowners, land managers, insurance companies and researchers to develop risk management solutions. Global case studies illustrate a variety of integrated approaches, and a concluding section provides specifications and contexts for the next generation of process models.

Natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, floods, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and hurricanes cause environmental, economic as well as sociological problems worldwide. In recent years, greater availability of information and sensational media reports of natural hazard occurrence -and in particular in terms of property damage or loss oflife caused by these hazards -resulted in an increase of hazard awareness at a societal level. This increase in public awareness has often been misconstrued as an indication that natural hazards have been occurring more frequently with higher magnitudes in recent years/decades, thus causing more damage than in the past. It is still under debate, however, to which extent recent increases in damage can be related to changing frequencies of natural processes, or whether catastrophic events occur at similar rates as they always had. If the latter is the case, the reason for a greater damage can be related to dramatic population growth over the last century, with a substantial augmentation of population density in some regions. Indeed, the implications are more server in underdeveloped and developing countries, where urbanisation has increasingly occurred in hazard prone areas such as coastal zones, alluvial river plains and steep slopes, thus causing an increase in the exposure to natural hazards. Some groups of society in wealthy countries accept higher risks in order to live directly on top of a cliff or on a steep slope to enjoy panoramic views of the landscape.

This book explores the complexities of landslide susceptibility and critical rainfall conditions in Lower Austria through a detailed analysis and actionable insights. This work provides a comprehensive approach to understanding LANDSLIDE  risks by using data-driven methodologies, run-out models, and economic risk assessments .  The book offers two types of scenarios: one that models more fluid LANDLSIDE movements and another that models more solid patterns, each responding differently to triggering events. This dual approach offers a more nuanced understanding of the variables at play, making the book an essential resource for those looking to make informed decisions ON LANSLIDE HAZARDS AND RISKS. If you are a policy-maker, an urban planner, or an environmental scientist, this book provides you with the tools needed to mitigate LANDSLIDE risks and improve safety measures. The focus here is on delivering solutions that have both immediate and long-term applications in the real-world context.  The book fills a gap in the existing literature by providing a multi-dimensional, cross-sectoral assessment of landslide HAZARDS AND risks. Using state-of-the-art spatiotemporal LANDSLIDE models, the book goes beyond traditional hazard analysis to integrate critical variables like soil depth, economic impact, and climate conditions, here defined as scenarios. This approach provides a more holistic view of the risks, making it a valuable resource for both research and practical application. The principal audience remains environmental researchers and risk management professionals.

How can we better understand, assess, and manage the risks posed by natural hazards in a rapidly changing world? This open access book provides clear answers by combining scientific knowledge with practical experience in disaster risk management. It equips readers with tools to identify and evaluate risks, introduces innovative approaches such as impact chains, and demonstrates how institutions and communities can strengthen their resilience.Covering a broad range of hazards – from floods and storms to earthquakes and landslides – the chapters present both established methods and emerging trends. Special attention is given to socio-economic and psycho-social dimensions, acknowledging that disasters impact people not only physically but also socially and emotionally. International and European frameworks, including the Sendai Framework and the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, are explored as models for effective, coordinated action.By bridging research, policy, and practice, the book offers clear explanations, case examples, and forward-looking perspectives. Readers gain a structured understanding of evolving risks, their underlying drivers, and strategies for adaptation in the face of climate change, technological transformation, and growing vulnerabilities.Designed as a concise yet comprehensive reference, this volume is an essential resource for students, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers seeking actionable insights and a future-oriented approach to disaster risk management.

What is modern scientific geography concerned with today? This volume discusses selected themes in physical and human geography, methodological approaches, societal significance and teaching methods. The 19 chapters include general themes such as contributions on locations, mobility and planning, articles on mountain areas, climate change and ecological issues. Finally, didactic and methodological questions are addressed. The volume seeks to inform, discuss and further develop the latest relevant research findings. It addresses scientific geography, applied and practical geography (in regional planning and development, location development, town planning, cartography, geo computer science) as well as school teachers. The book is the result of the 57th German Geographers'' Congress held in Vienna in 2009.
