This book is a volume in the Penn Press Anniversary Collection. To mark its 125th anniversary in 2015, the University of Pennsylvania Press rereleased more than 1,100 titles from Penn Press's distinguished backlist from 1899-1999 that had fallen out of print. ‘Before I ever thought of a project, I began photographing whatever struck me as beautiful, amazing, worth telling about … In all of my work, testimonies have been an important element of the projects.’ Born in Finland, Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen studied in London, founding the Amber Film & Photography Collective with her fellow students, and then moved to North East England in the 1960s. She has been based in Newcastle ever since, deeply rooted in the local community. Focusing on two of her photographic series – Byker (1969–83) and Writing in the Sand (1978–98) – this book captures a working class neighbourhood and reveals the devastating impact that the redevelopment of Newcastle’s East End had on the community, but also the moments of joy of the group outings to the beach. Konttinen’s love for this part of the world is at the heart of these moving but never sentimental pictures. Her photographs and Amber’s films were inscribed in the British section of the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in 2011. The Tate Photography Series is a celebration of international photography in the Tate collection and an introduction to some of the greatest photographers at work today. With the direct involvement of living photographers in collaboration with photography curators, these books showcase the best and most notable images taken across the globe, from city streets to seashores, moving across landscapes and through subcultures, in a visual travelogue of our world. Each book contains a new conversation between curator and photographer and is prefaced with a short introduction. The theme for the first four titles is Community and Solidarity. If you are a good draughtsman you are ipso facto a good painter’ – Walter Sickert.The drawings included in this publication reveal the working practice of Walter Sickert (1860–1942), an artist considered by many the ‘father’ of modern British art. Sickert was a prolific draughtsman throughout his career and used his drawings as preparatory works for his paintings. Drawn from nature, his sketches capture the intricacies of architectures, the infectious thrill of performance, and even the nuances of a subject’s character. Sickert frequently visited locations again and again, investing long periods of time in locations to detail certain elements or even redraw entire views. In doing so, he was able to develop ideas and concepts before an image was possibly transferred to canvas.As a mentor and teacher to a younger generation of artists he also attempted to teach the use of preparatory drawings to his protégés, steering the course of arts practice in Britain. Despite being afflicted with many health conditions throughout his lifetime, he travelled extensively to France, Spain, America and Mexico, their influences appearing across his paintings, his music, and his designs for the ballet, opera, and the theatre.This exciting publication — set to accompany the first Tate exhibition of Burra's works since the artist's lifetime in 1973 — offers a close look at over eighty of Burra's works, some of which will be presented for the first time from the Tate archives. It reveals the life of an artist who experienced first-hand many of the most turbulent and catastrophic events of the twentieth century, including the Second World War and the Spanish Civil War, and reflected them in his increasingly surrealist work.
