“What a provocative and refreshing stance on evidence-informed education! Evidence-informed education may currently be a divided field, but this must-read book offers hope that a reunion of existing approaches may be possible for a ‘productive tension’ where researchers, school leaders and teachers work together... The disconnect in education between research, policy and practice needs this intellectual reboot!”Professor Tanya Ovenden-Hope, Provost and Professor of Education, Plymouth Marjon University, UK“As a school leader, this book is an invaluable guide to evidence-informed educational research... It is a hopeful vision of a united evidence-informed education field in which practitioners, policymakers and researchers all play an active role as discerning creators and users of evidence.”Sam Mason, Deputy Headteacher, Thornton Primary School, UK“This is a wonderful book that deserves to be widely read and, more importantly, widely acted on. It presents a robust and detailed critique of current orthodoxies in how we have tried to improve educational practice through the use of evidence. Researchers, practitioners, policymakers and funders with an interest in evidence and school improvement should take note.”Professor Robert Coe, Director of Research and Development at Evidence Based Education, UK, and Senior Associate at the Education Endowment Foundation, UKA Critical Guide to Evidence-Informed Education analyses the role of research in education and its potential for improving education policy and practice. The book considers how divisions, both between different research traditions and between theory and practice, are hindering progress. Additional online content gives readers access to extra resources such as reflective questions and technical annexes to deepen understanding. Drawing on their experiences both as teachers and researchers, the authors expertly review fundamental questions about what research is, what it is for and the challenges of generating, communicating and using evidence. For researchers, this book offers an extended critical commentary and methodological critique of several related research communities and their current and potential contribution to educational improvement. When gruff and intimidating security consultant Max Stillman appears without warning in the San Francisco office of McClaren Life and Casualty and begins asking questions and scrutinizing files, the employees can''t help wondering just which of them he''s been hired to investigate. The first to find out is young data analyst John Walker when Stillman''s mysterious investigation leads out of town, he announces he''s taking Walker with him. Walker has been picked because a colleague with whom he once had a love affair has disappeared after paying a very large death benefit to an impostor. Since Walker knew her intimately, Stillman believes he''s likely to be useful in finding and convicting her. But because he knows her so well, Walker is convinced that she is innocent, and that he must join the pursuit so that he can defend her. These conflicting purposes unite Walker and Stillman in an urgent search that propels them across the country and into unexpected dangers. The trail ends in a deceptively peaceful corner of the New Hampshire countryside, where they find themselves trapped by a deadly conspiracy that''s much bigger, older, and more evil than they could ever have imagined.Martin Cruz Smith declared a previous Perry novel as beautifully crafted as a good automatic weapon. In Death Benefits, Perry gives us another stunning suspense story with writing that is, as the Los Angeles Times said, as sharp as a sushi knife.

Poison Flower, the seventh novel in Thomas Perry's celebrated Jane Whitefield series, opens as Jane spirits James Shelby, a man unjustly convicted of his wife's murder, out of the heavily guarded criminal court building in downtown Los Angeles. But the price of Shelby's freedom is high. Within minutes, men posing as police officers kidnap Jane and, when she tries to escape, shoot her. Jane's captors are employees of the man who really killed Shelby's wife. He believes he won't be safe until Shelby is dead, and his men will do anything to force Jane to reveal Shelby's hiding place. But Jane endures their torment, and is willing to die rather than betray Shelby. Jane manages to escape but she is alone, wounded, thousands of miles from home with no money and no identification, hunted by the police as well as her captors. She must rejoin Shelby, reach his sister before the hunters do, and get them both to safety. In this unrelenting, breathtaking cross-country battle, Jane survives by relying on the traditions of her Seneca ancestors. When at last Jane turns to fight, her enemies face a cunning and ferocious warrior who has one weapon that they don't.
