The "Prosopographie der mittelbyzantinischen Zeit" is a comprehensive biographical dictionary of the eastern Mediterranean including Byzantine Italy in the early Middle Ages. It is published in two sections of five volumes documenting more than 20,000 persons in total. The first section covers the period 641-867, the second section 867-1025. In addition to the five volumes, each section includes not only a prolegomena volume, which covers the most important Byzantine and other relevant sources, but also a concluding volume containing lists of abbreviations, indices, adenda and corrigenda. Work on the second section will be finished by 2010.

Concluding the publication of the first section, this volume contains addenda and corridenda to the volumes already published, and the indexes: variants of names, sources, titles and occupations and a geographical index. The indexes allow the work to be accessed from a variety of starting points. The prosopography thus provides information not only about the persons documented but also about Byzantine society and the history of Byzantium together with that of its Eastern and Western neighbours. The whole prosopography encompasses seven volumes and over 11,500 people from the time of the approximate beginning of the Middle Byzantine period (641) up to the accession of power of the Macedonian dynasty (867).

This is the first systematic study of literary formulae (topoi) in Greek medieval lives of the saints. Thomas Pratsch compiles a comprehensive collection of material, including a systematic catalogue of the topoi. In his evaluation of them he provides new insights into the genesis, transmission and historical development of the genre of Greek saints’ vitae. He traces the gradual development of the vitae from various other literary forms and, working from a new perspective, lends support to the thesis that a canon of Greek lives of the saints became established from the end of the 10th century and into the 11th century. This study is a valuable reference work on Byzantine hagiographic literature.

Theodora was the daughter of a bear trainer at the circus in Constantinople and owing to her beauty and intelligence rose to courtesan of influential men of the Byzantine Empire. Soon emperor Justinian, the most powerful man between Gibraltar and Persia, fell in love with her and after having changed the laws beforehand married her and raised her to Augusta. Theodora had some influence on various governmental decisions and possibly helped her husband to keep power during the Nika riots. The author succeeds in vividly telling the story of this exceptional woman. He addresses difficulties with the historical sources and filtering doubtful information he thus presents an academically sound biography.
