However, material specific aspects are also discussed. The presentation of continuum mechanical and phenomenological foundations is followed by an introduction into classical failure hypotheses. A major part of the book is devoted to linear elastic and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics. Further subjects are creep fracture, dynamic fracture mechanics, damage mechanics, probabilistic fracture mechanics, failure of thin films and fracture of piezoelectric materials. The book also contains an extensive introduction into micromechanics.

Im Vordergrund steht die mechanische Beschreibung von Bruchvorgängen, wobei auch materialspezifische Aspekte diskutiert werden. Auf die Behandlung von kontinuumsmechanischen und phänomenologischen Grundlagen folgt ein Einblick in die klassischen Bruch- und Versagenshypothesen sowie in makro- und mikroskopische Phänomene des Bruchs. Ein umfangreicher Teil ist der linearen und elastisch-plastischen Bruchmechanik gewidmet. Weitere Themen sind die Kriechbruchmechanik, Bruchdynamik, Schädigungsmechanik sowie die probabilistische Bruchmechanik. Eine Einführung in die Mikromechanik und die Homogenisierung elastischer, elastisch-plastischer und thermoelastischer Materialien ergänzt das Werk.

Die 5. Auflage wurde erweitert und um zahlreiche Übungsaufgaben sowie Abbildungen ergänzt.
