African Englishes and Multilingualism for the Transformative Development of Postcolonial Africa
Inbunden, Engelska, 2025

This open access edited volume brings together a team of linguists to explore how indigenized varieties of English and multilingualism interact with the holistic transformation of Africa. Contributors discuss the transformative development vision for Africa with a focus on ex-colonial languages, indigenized varieties and indigenous mother tongues. In doing so, they explore linguistic evolution and developments towards endonormativity, investigate the correlation between the Africanisation of English and transformative development, the indiginization of medical terminology in HIV/AIDS consultations, the interactions of Romance languages with local English varieties, and resonances between decolonizing multilingualisms in Singapore and Africa.Going beyond traditional emphases on economic and industrial progress, the authors gathered here ultimately develop new analytical frameworks that align with African realities and priorities and ultimately promote the decolonisation of the African minds, which remains a work in progress. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Acquisition and Variation in World Englishes
Bridging Paradigms and Rethinking Approaches
Inbunden, Engelska, 2023

Skickas inom 5-8 vardagar
This book is the first of its kind to provide an integrative look at World Englishes, (second) language acquisition, and sociolinguistics in a variety of contexts of English around the globe with a focus on the language of children and adolescents. It thus aims to bridge the paradigm gaps that have been identified between these approaches but have rarely been explored in greater detail. The range of topics includes the areas of first and second language acquisition; sociolinguistic variation and awareness; language use and choice; family language policies; language attitudes and perception; modelling children’s and adolescents’ language in World Englishes; the role of child language acquisition in processes of language change; as well as methodologies of eliciting speech and writing from children and adolescents. The book combines qualitative and quantitative approaches and draws on psycholinguistic, corpus-linguistic, and ethnographic methodologies. What unites the contributions to the volume is that they all address the theoretical implications that a joint approach between World Englishes, sociolinguistics, and language acquisition has, i.e. why it is fruitful and how it can contribute to a deeper understanding of the different research paradigms.

This volume is a collection of German and English papers presented at a symposium for young researchers on ‘Norms in Educational Linguistics’, which was held in Giessen (Germany) in 2008. The proceedings represent a multitude of philologies, theoretical frameworks and applications and are structured in thematic sections ranging from Language policy as a reflection of cultural norms to Norm, standard, deviation and Target norms in foreign language teaching.

Variation and Change in Aberdeen English
A Sociophonetic Study
Inbunden, Engelska, 2016

This book is the first major sociophonetic work on the urban accent of Aberdeen in North-East Scotland. The study shows how the accent has changed following the large-scale immigration from other parts of Scotland and the UK since the 1970s. It is rooted in a dialect contact framework and based on sociolinguistic interviews with a stratified sample of 44 Aberdonians. The study uses an innovative method to assess the importance of the individual speaker in innovating and conserving the local accent. Based on six phonological variables, it shows how the traditional variants are replaced or marginalised, supraregional forms gain ground and strongly marked forms typical of Glaswegian or London English are added to the local feature pool.
