Within the various aspects of life-science technologies medicine and information technology will change next millennium's quality-of-life fundamentally. Thanks to the rapid growth of telecommunication industry and the success and popularity of the internet the face of medicine will essentially change, because information technology is expected to play a major role in future health care systems. The conference MEDICOM 2000 is a discussion forum on fast and cost efficient patient-data exchange systems between doctors' offices, medical laboratories, telearchive services, health care insurances, highly specialized experts in hospitals etc. The conference brought together scientific, medical and application experts from university, clinical and commercial sites of both areas - medicine and communication - to stimulate synergy between these rapidly evolving future technologies. We would like to acknowledge all the parties who contributed to the success of the conference. Das Buch deckt neben den Themen der Entstehung, der Eigenschaften sowie Detektion von Röntgenstrahlen, die Entwicklungshistorie der Computertomographie, die elementaren Methoden der Signalverarbeitung und insbesondere die Signalverarbeitungsverfahren der Computertomographie ab. Hierbei wird Wert auf die ausführliche Darstellung der Mathematik der zwei- und dreidimensionalen Rekonstruktionsverfahren gelegt. Neben der ausführlichen Erklärung der theoretischen Konzepte wird auf die praktischen Randbedingungen der technischen Realisierung sowie auf die auftretenden Bildartefakte besonders eingegangen.

Contributions from industry, clinics, universities and research labs with foci on medical imaging (CT, MRT, US, PET, SPECT etc.), medical image processing (segmentation, registration, visualization etc.), computer-assisted surgery (medical robotics, navigation), biomechanics (motion analysis, accident research, computer in sports, ergonomics etc.), biomedical optics (OCT, soft-tissue optics, optical monitoring etc.) and laser medicine (tissue ablation, gas analytics, topometry etc.) give insight to recent engineering, clinical and mathematical studies.

This volume provides a comprehensive overview of recent developments in magnetic particle imaging (MPI), a novel imaging modality. Using various static and oscillating magnetic fields, and tracer materials made from iron oxide nanoparticles, MPI can perform background-free measurements of the particles’ local concentration. The method exploits the nonlinear remagnetization behavior of the particles and has the potential to surpass current methods for the detection of iron oxide in terms of sensitivity and spatiotemporal resolution. Starting from an introduction to the technology, the topics addressed include setting up an imaging device, assessment of image quality, development of new MPI tracer materials, and the first preclinical results. This is the first book to be published on magnetic particle imaging, and it will be an invaluable source of information for everyone with an interest in this exciting new modality.

Tis book provides an overview of X-ray technology, the historic developmental milestones of modern CT systems, and gives a comprehensive insight into the main reconstruction methods used in computed tomography. Te basis of reconstr- tion is, undoubtedly, mathematics. However, the beauty of computed tomography cannot be understood without a detailed knowledge of X-ray generation, photon– matter interaction, X-ray detection, photon statistics, as well as fundamental signal processing concepts and dedicated measurement systems. The workshop aims at covering the status and recent developments of both, the instrumentation and the tracer material, as each of them is equally important in designing a well performing MPI. For instance, the current state of the art in magnetic coil design for MPI is discussed. With a new symmetrical arrangement of coils, a field-free line (FFL) can be produced that promises a significantly higher sensitivity compared with the standard arrangement for a FFP. Furthermore, the workshop aims at presenting results from phantom and pre-clinical studies.

In these proceedings, an overview on recent results of a novel imaging modality based on magnetic nanoparticles is given. This imaging concept, called magnetic particle imaging (MPI), falls into the category of functional imaging and, hence, the magnetic nanoparticles may serve as tracers of metabolic processes. Today, there are interesting challenges within the practical set-up of a scanning device and also in the design of new MPI nanoparticles. During this workshop at the University of Lübeck in 2010, scientists from chemical engineering, biology, electrical engineering, physics, computer sciences and medicine discussed the promises and challenges of MPI.
