This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Medical Imaging and Augmented Reality, MIAR 2004, held in Beijing, China, in August 2004.The 41 revised full papers presented together with 4 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 93 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on image processing, reconstruction, and coding; statistical and shape based segmentation; brain image analysis; cardiac modeling and segmentation; image registration; and surgical navigation and augmented reality.

With the rapid increase in the variety and quantity of biomedical images in recent years, we see a steadily growing number of computer vision technologies applied to biomedical applications. The time is ripe for us to take a closer look at the accomplishments and experiences gained in this research subdomain, and to strategically plan the directions of our future research. The scientific goal of our workshop, “Computer Vision for Biomedical Image Applications: Current Techniques and Future Trends” (CVBIA), is to examine the diverse applications of computer vision to biomedical image applications, considering both current methods and promising new trends. An additional goal is to provide the opportunity for direct interactions between (1) prominent senior researchers and young scientists, including students, postdoctoral associates and junior faculty; (2) local researchers and international leaders in biomedical image analysis; and (3) computer scientists and medical practitioners. Our CVBIA workshop had two novel characteristics: each contributed paper was authored primarily by a young scientist, and the workshop attracted an unusually large number of well-respected invited speakers (and their papers). We had the good fortune of having Dr. Ayache of INRIA, France to talk about “Computational Anatomy and Computational Physiology,” Prof. Grimson of MIT to discuss “Analyzing Anatomical Structures: Leveraging Multiple Sources of Knowledge,” Dr. Jiang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to present their work on “Computational Neuroanatomy and Brain Connectivity,” Prof.

The Third International Workshop on Medical Imaging and Augmented Reality, MIAR 2006, was held in Shanghai, China at the Regal International East Asia Hotel during August 17-18, 2006. The goal of MIAR 2006 was to bring together researchers in medical image computing and intervention to present the state-of-the-art devel- ments in this ever-growing research area. The meeting consisted of a single track of oral/poster presentations, with each session led by an invited lecture from our dist- guished international faculty members. For MIAR 2006, we received 87 full subm- sions, which were subsequently reviewed by up to 5 reviewers, resulting in the acc- tance of 45 full papers included in this volume. For this workshop, we also included four papers from the invited speakers covering shape modeling, fMRI analysis, and study of cerebral connectivity and plasticity. Running such a workshop requires dedication, and we appreciate the commitment of the MIAR 2006 Programme Committee and reviewers who worked to a tight de- line in putting together this workshop. We would also like to thank members of the local Organizing Committee, who have been working so hard behind the scenes to make MIAR 2006 a great success. It was our great pleasure to welcome this year’s MIAR attendees to Shanghai, which is the largest base of Chinese industrial technology, an important seaport and China's largest commercial and financial center.

MICCAI is the foremost international scienti?c event in the ?eld of medical image computing and computer-assisted interventions. The annual conference has a high scienti?c standard by virtue of the threshold for acceptance, and accordingly MICCAI has built up a track record of attracting leading scientists, engineersandcliniciansfromawiderangeoftechnicalandbiomedicaldisciplines. This year, we received 786 submissions, well in line with the previous two conferences in New York and London. Three program chairs and a program committee of 31 scientists, all with a recognized standing in the ?eld of the conference, were responsible for the selection of the papers. The review process was set up such that each paper was considered by the three program chairs, two program committee members, and a minimum of three external reviewers. The review process was double-blind, so the reviewers did not know the identity of the authors of the submission. After a careful evaluation procedure, in which all controversialand gray area papers were discussed individually, we arrived at a total of 251 accepted papers for MICCAI 2010, of which 45 were selected for podium presentation and 206 for poster presentation. The acceptance percentage (32%) was in keeping with that of previous MICCAI conferences. All 251 papers are included in the three MICCAI 2010 LNCS volumes.
