‘Bakhtin and his Others’ aims to develop an understanding of Mikhail Bakhtin’s ideas through a contextual approach, particularly with a focus on Bakhtin studies from the 1990s onward. The volume offers fresh theoretical insights into Bakhtin’s ideas on (inter)subjectivity and temporality – including his concepts of chronotope and literary polyphony – by reconsidering his ideas in relation to the sources he employs, and taking into account later research on similar topics. The book shows Chekhov in a new light, as a writer with a synthetic ethical worldview on which his poetics are based. The book’s key finding is that the temporal experience of modernity lies at the centre of Chekhov’s work. This conclusion is reached by comparing the ways in which modern temporality is represented in the different genres in which Chekhov wrote, from the non-fictional Sakhalin Island to his short fiction and drama. In terms of methodology, the book combines the historiographical and sociological views of modernity as based on a certain understanding of time with Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of the chronotope.

Suuret romaanit Sota ja rauha ja Anna Karenina takaavat Leo Tolstoille pysyvän sijan maailmankirjallisuuden huippujen joukossa.Kansainväliseen maineeseensa hän ei kuitenkaan noussut eepikkona vaan toisinajattelun moniottelijana joka saarnasi pasifismin, kasvissyönnin, tupakoinnin vahingollisuuden ja kansalaistottelemattomuuden sanomaa jo 1800-luvun viimeisinä vuosikymmeninä ja sai Mahatma Gandhin, Theodore Rooseveltin, George Bernhard Shawin ja Bertrand Russellin kaltaisia ihailijoita. Myös Suomessa herättäjä Tolstoi sai seuraajia, joista tunnetuimpiin kuului Arvid Järnefelt perheineen. Ihmiskunnan omantunnon äänenä esiintynyt Tolstoi halusi lakkauttaa armeijat, tuomioistuimet, koulut, laitoskirkon ja verotuksen. Historian roskatynnyriin hän halusi siivota suurimman osan taiteesta - myös ja erityisesti omat teoksensa.Teokset ovat pysyneet, tolstoilaisuuden opinkappaleet ovat joutuneet monenlaisten uudelleenarviointien kohteeksi päättyneen vuosisadan mittaan.Mitä Tolstoi todella sanoi käsittää yksitoista esseetä joissa tarkastellaan Leo Tolstoin kirjailijantyötä, aatekuvaa ja sen vaikutuksia sekä hänen ristiriitaista persoonallisuuttaan. Esseitä täydentävät kirjallisuusluettelot sekä mittava filmografia. Kirjoituskokoelma lähti rakentumaan Venäläisen kirjallisuuden seuran vuonna 2019 järjestämän luentosarjan pohjalta. Kustannusosakeyhtiö Siltala julkaisee sen yhteistyössä Venäläisen kirjallisuuden seuran kanssa.
