The female musicians of the Instituto della Pietà play from a gallery in the church, their faces half hidden by metal grilles. They live segregated from the world. Cecilia, is a violinist who, during anguished, sleepless nights, writes letters to the mother she never knew, haunted by her and hating her by turns. She eats little and cannot sleep. But things begin to change when a new violin teacher arrives at the institute. The astonishing music of Vivaldi, the ''Red Priest'', electrifies her and changes her attitude to life, compelling her to make a courageous choice.

Utställningskatalogen är producerad av FACE (Foundation of Arts for a Contemporary Europe), nätverket bildades 2008 och består av de fem privata konstinstitutionerna DESTE Foundation, Aten; Ellipse Foundation, Cascais; Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin; La maison rouge – Fondation Antoine de Galbert, Paris och Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall. Publikationen publicerades i samband med utställningen Investigations of a Dog, 2011. Utställningen har hämtat inspiration och lånat sin titel från en novell av Franz Kafka (1922), i samband med utställningen har varje institution bjudit in en lokal författare att skriva en ny novell inspirerad av Kafka. De fem novellerna är utgivna i titeln FACE Investigations of a Dog – Works from Five European Art Foundations samt som fem separata delar på originalspråk. De inbjudna författarna är Aristide Antonas (GR), Rui Cardoso Martins (PT), Jonas Hassen Khemiri (SE), Emmanuelle Pagano (FR) och Tiziano Scarpa (IT).

Venedig im 18. Jahrhundert. Im Ospedale della Pietà, einem Kloster und Waisenhaus, können Neugeborene abgelegt werden, deren Mütter unerkannt bleiben wollen.So erging es auch Cecilia. Inzwischen ist sie sechzehn und die Begabteste im Orchester des Waisenhauses, das über Italien hinaus berühmt ist. Mehr noch als von Musik ist sie von der Frage besessen, wer ihre Mutter war und weshalb sie sie weggeben hat. Ruhelos streift sie nachts durch die verborgensten Winkel des Klosters und schreibt Briefe an eine imaginierte Mutter.Als ein neuer Musikmeister eintrifft, ändert sich ihr Leben. Es ist Antonio Vivaldi. Der junge Komponist mit dem roten Haarschopf erkennt das große Talent Cecilias und verspricht ihr, sie zur gefeierten Musikerin zu machen. Aber er knüpft daran eine Bedingung, die Cecilia vor die Entscheidung stellt, welchen Weg sie wählen will.

Dass Venedig die Form eines Fisches hat, sieht jeder, der auf eine Landkarte schaut.Tiziano Scarpa lädt dazu ein, diesen Wunderfisch mit allen Sinnen zu erkunden – deshalb schreibt er nicht über Venedig, sondern darüber, was in Venedig mit uns passiert. Die Kapitel heißen: Füße, Beine, Herz, Gesicht, Ohren, Mund, Nase, Augen und Haut. Wir erfahren, warum man sich in Venedig unbedingt verirren sollte, weshalb die Stadt als Kulisse für Liebeserklärungen ungeeignet ist und wieso Venedigs Schönheit hochgradig gesundheitsgefährdend ist.Scarpa wirft viel vom Bildungsballast, der auf Venedig lastet, ins Meer und sorgt dafür, dass man über diesen wunderlichen Venedig-Fisch auf unerwartete Weise ins Staunen gerät.Für diese Ausgabe hat Tiziano Scarpa seine »passeggiata« gründlich überarbeitet und ergänzt: unter anderem mit vielen neuen Möglichkeiten, sich im Herzen der Lagune zu verlieren – und mit ein paar Seitenblicken auf das nur in der Pandemie glasklare Wasser, das Venedig immer häufiger zu Leibe rückt.
