Vem är Jesus, Messias? Vilka utgör hans folk? De två frågorna vill Matteus formulera och besvara i sitt evangelium. Tobias Hägerland är docent i Nya testamentets exegetik och lektor vid Göteborgs universitet. Han är författare till ett flertal artiklar och böcker, framför allt inriktade på frågor som berör evangelierna och den historiske Jesus. Tobias är lekman i den katolska kyrkan.

"Under mitt arbete har jag slagits av hur medvetet författaren tycks ha planerat den lilla textsamling som vi kallar pastoralbreven. I likhet med många andra forskare tror jag att de tre breven är skrivna flera årtionden efter Paulus död och att de föregivna adressaterna - Timotheos och Titus - står som ett slags symboler för ett ledarideal i 100-talets kristendom. Det som fascinerar mig är att författaren konsekvent låter de två adressaternas helt olika bakgrunder och identiteter, som är kända från andra nytestamentliga texter, prägla innehållet i de brev som riktas till dem. Timotheos förutsätts vara Paulus viktigaste medarbetare av judisk härkomst, medan Titus är hans mest framstående icke-judiske medarbetare. The four Gospels unanimously present Jesus as someone who quoted from, commented on, and engaged with the Scriptures of Israel. Whether this portrayal goes back to the historical Jesus has been a hotly debated issue among scholars. In this book, eleven expert researchers from four different continents tackle the question anew. This is done through detailed study of specific themes and passages from the Scriptures which Jesus, according to the Gospels, quoted or alluded to. Among the various topics investigated are Jesus’ use of Genesis 2 to bolster his teaching on divorce, his reference to the Queen of Sheba story in 1 Kings, the significance of the Book of Zechariah for Jesus’ self-understanding, and his enigmatic quotation of Psalm 22 on the cross. These and other contributions result in a common understanding of Jesus’ use of the Scriptures. Not only did Jesus engage with the Scriptures, according to these scholars, but his mode of engagement has to be placed within the early Jewish interpretative framework within which he lived.

Von Anbeginn der kritischen Jesusforschung sind die Fragen zu Jesu Verständnis seiner Autorität und seiner Ziele zentral gewesen. Die Forschung befasst sich noch heute mit diesen Fragen. Der vorliegende Band versammelt Beiträge über den historischen Jesus, die ursprünglich am zweiten nordischen Symposium in Lund 2012 vorgestellt wurden. Hiermit wird der 2010 von dänischen, finnischen, norwegischen und schwedischen Forschern in Turku begonnene Dialog fortgesetzt und erweitert. Die Themen der Identität und der Ziele Jesu werden unter dem Begriff "Mission" vereint. Dieser Begriff umfasst sowohl Jesu Sendungsbewusstsein, seine Ziele sowie die Hilfsmittel, die zum Erreichen derselben verwendet wurden. Die Beiträge in diesem Band behandeln methodologische Probleme, bewerten Vorschläge der bisher durchgeführten Forschung und schlagen neue Wege vor, um die verschiedenen Aspekte der Mission Jesu zu verstehen.
