Taking a ''history from below'' approach, the volume examines how the minds and behaviour of individuals were moulded by the Party as the Reich took the road to Total War. The ever-increasing numbers of German workers conscripted into the Wehrmacht were replaced with forced foreign workers and slave labourers and concentration camp prisoners. The interaction in everyday life between German civilian society and these coerced groups is explored, as is that society''s relationship to the Holocaust. From early 1943, the war on the home front was increasingly dominated by attack from the air. The role of the Party, administration, police, and courts in providing for the vast numbers of those rendered homeless, in bolstering civilian morale with ''miracle revenge weapons'' propaganda, and in maintaining order in a society in disintegration is reviewed in detail. For society in uniform, the war in the east was one of ideology and annihilation, with intensified indoctrination of the troops after Stalingrad. The social profile of this army is analysed through study of a typical infantry division. The volume concludes with an account of the various forms of resistance to Hitler''s regime, in society and the military, culminating in the failed attempt on his life in July 1944.

Johann Joachim Spalding (1714-1804) ist ein Hauptvertreter der deutschen Aufklärungstheologie. Eine kirchen-, theologie- und geistesgeschichtliche Würdigung seines Lebenswerks wird bis heute dadurch erschwert, daß der größte Teil seiner Schriften nur noch in den in wenigen Bibliotheken vorhandenen Originalausgaben zugänglich ist, deren Textgestalt von Auflage zu Auflage nicht unerheblich variiert. Die 'Kritische Ausgabe' soll die Schriften Spaldings in erschwinglichen Einzelausgaben wieder verfügbar machen. Der diplomatisch getreue Text einschließlich der Varianten der unterschiedlichen Auflagen wird durch eine knappe, sachbezogene Einleitung, den Nachweis direkter Zitate sowie ein Register ergänzt.Die in vier jeweils erheblich veränderten Auflagen erschienene populartheologische Schrift 'Religion, eine Angelegenheit des Menschen' (11797, 21798, 31799, 41806) ist gleichsam das theologische Testament Spaldings. Diese Apologie des 'Königs der Neologen' hat das Religionsverständnis der deutschen Aufklärungstheologie zusammengefaßt. Der frühromantischen Religionstheorie, nicht zuletzt den Reden 'Über die Religion' (11799) des jungen Schleiermacher, wurde damit ein wesentlicher Traditionsimpuls gegeben, der zu kritisch-transformierender Absetzung herausforderte.

Johann Joachim Spalding (1714-1804) ist ein Hauptvertreter der deutschen Aufklärungstheologie. Seine Schrift Ueber die Nutzbarkeit des Predigtamtes und deren Beförderung veröffentlichte er erstmals 1772 als Berliner Propst und Oberkonsistorialrat. Sie ist ebenso das klassische Beispiel einer prinzipiellen Homiletik der Aufklärungszeit wie eine Apologie des Predigtamts. In Auseinandersetzung mit der Philosophie der Aufklärung, namentlich mit David Hume, und in kritischer Abgrenzung gegen den katholischen Amtsbegriff entwickelt Spalding ein modernes evangelisches Amtsverständnis. Er plädiert für eine ansprechende Predigt, deren Sprach- und Denkformen allgemein verständlich sind und die den Traditionsbestand des Christentums für die religiöse Praxis der Menschen fruchtbar macht. Die Breitenwirkung dieses Hauptwerks der Neologie läßt sich kaum überschätzen: Generationen von Pfarrern sind dadurch in ihrem Selbstverständnis und ihrer Berufswahrnehmung geprägt worden, die theologische Fachdiskussion hat die Anstöße rasch und intensiv rezipiert, selbst die literarische Gestaltung von Pfarrerfiguren, etwa durch Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz, Friedrich Nicolai oder Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, hat darauf geradezu unmittelbar reagiert.Die in drei erheblich veränderten Auflagen erschienene Schrift wird hier erstmals wieder zugänglich gemacht. Entsprechend den Maßgaben der Kritischen Spalding-Edition präsentiert sie das Werk in einer den Textbestand aller Auflagen integrativ darbietenden kritischen Ausgabe. Eine konzentrierte historisch-theologische Einleitung, knappe Erläuterungen sowie ausführliche Register ergänzen den Band.

Der Band vereint die beiden autobiographischen Schriften des prominenten Aufklärungstheologen Johann Joachim Spalding (1714-1804). Die zwischen 1746 und 1757 verfaßten Briefe von Herrn Spalding an Herrn Gleim, vom Empfänger 1771 verkürzt und unautorisiert herausgegeben, werden unter kritischer Einbeziehung der vollständigen handschriftlichen Vorlagen geboten. Der schwärmerisch-empfindsame Freundschaftskult, den Spalding mit dem anakreontischen Dichter Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim (1719-1803) während eines Jahrzehnts pflegte, hat darin authentischen Niederschlag gefunden. Die Briefe eröffnen einen ungemein erhellenden, die bisherigen Kenntnisse substantiell bereichernden Einblick in eine wichtige Entwicklungsphase des späteren Berliner Propsts und Oberkonsistorialrats.Johann Joachim Spalding's Lebensbeschreibung von ihm selbst aufgesetzt ist ein schonungslos offener, sympathischer Lebensbericht, den sein Sohn Georg Ludewig Spalding kurz nach dem Tod des Vaters 1804 ergänzt und veröffentlicht hat. Für Leben und Werk des bedeutenden Spalding, den man treffend den "König der Neologen" (W. Philipp) genannt hat, aber auch für den Abschnitt der Kirchen- und Geistesgeschichte, dessen Zeuge er war, ist dies nicht weniger als ein Schlüsseldokument.Beide Schriften werden durch einen ausführlichen Kommentar sowie durch detaillierte Register erschlossen.
