This volume brings together the latest results and discussions from research carried out in the eastern Fertile Crescent, the so-called hilly flanks, and adjacent regions, as well as providing key historical perspectives on earlier fieldwork in the region. The emergence of sedentary food producing societies in southwest Asia ca. 10,000 years ago has been a key research focus for archaeologists since the 1930s. This book provides a balance to the weight of work undertaken in the western Fertile Crescent, namely the Levant and southern Anatolia. This preference has led to a heavy emphasis on these regions in discussions about where, when and how the transition from hunting and gathering to plant cultivation and animal domestication occurred. Chapters assess the role of the eastern Fertile Crescent as a key region in the Neolithization process in southwest Asia, highlighting the key and important contributions people in this region made to the emergence of sedentary farming societies. This book is primarily aimed at academics researching the transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture in southwest Asia. It will also be of interest to archaeologists working on this transition in other parts of Eurasia.

The transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture in Southwest Asia remains a key area of research for archaeologists. For many years, little intensive research was possible in the ‘eastern wing’ of the Fertile Crescent. This volume presents the results of the six-year long project Tracking Cultural and Environmental Change: The Late Epipalaeolithic and Early Neolithic in the Seimarreh Drainage, Central Zagros. The project aimed to develop a better understanding of the emergence of Neolithic societies in the central Zagros region, by re-investigating several key Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene sites in the Seimarreh River drainage. Over the course of four fieldwork seasons three key sites – Asiab, Ganj Dareh and Mar Gurgalan – were re-excavated. These three sites collectively cover the crucial timespan between c. 16,000–9,000 years ago during which Epipalaeolithic hunter-gatherers slowly moved towards plant cultivation and herding. This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the excavations and stratigraphy of these sites, their relative and absolute chronology, as well as the finds from the excavations. This evidence is contextualized against the paleoenvironmental evidence from the region, as well as broader debates concerning the emergence of the Neolithic in Southwest Asia. The chapters are written by specialists and experts in their fields and provide a wealth of important new data, and informed discussion about their interpretation and importance.

Ground Stone Tools and Past Foodways brings together a selection of papers presented at the 3rd meeting of the Association of Ground Stone Tools Research, which was held at the University of Copenhagen in 2019. Ground stone artefacts are one of the most enduring classes of material culture: first used by Palaeolithic gatherer-hunters, they are still used regularly by people in many parts of the world to grind, mash and pulverize plants, meat and minerals. As such, ground stone artefacts provide a well preserved record at the nexus of interaction between humans, plants and animals. The papers in this volume focus especially on the relationship between ground stone artefacts and foodways and include archaeological and ethnographic case studies ranging from the Palaeolithic to the current era, and geographically from Africa to Europe and Asia. They reflect the current state of the art in ground stone tool research and highlight the many ways in which foodways can be studied through holistic examinations of ground stone artefacts.
