Sören Kierkegaard (1813 55) är inte bara Skandinaviens internationellt mest kända tänkare, utan Cambridge-filosofen Ludvig Wittgenstein beskriver honom också som 1800-talets utan jämförelse största filosof. Som profilerad kristen tänkare, med en bred litterär produktion, fungerar han för många läsare som en Augustinus för vår egen tid. En central tanke i Kierkegaards kristna existensfilosofi är frihetsbegreppet. Att vara riktad mot sig själv, skriver han, är frihet. Viktigare än att känna sig själv är här själva processen att vara i vardande att bli sig själv, som står i motsättning till det själviska och är uttryck för den individuellt bestämda friheten. Motsatsen är förtvivlan och dess psykologiska motsvarighet ångest. Grundförutsättningen för Kierkegaards beskrivning av människans själv är gudsförhållandet, som han menar alla människor står i. I denna skapelsegivna relation, som för den enskilde kan vara mer eller mindre medveten, läggs fokus på självets helande: från förtvivlan, självets sjukdom, till frihet. Med Kierkegaards ord: »Det högsta som över huvud taget kan göras för en varelse, högre än allt man kan göra den till, är att göra den fri. Just därtill behövs allmakt för att kunna göra det.«

The academic disciplines of Biblical Studies and Systematic Theology were long closely linked to one another. However, in the modern period they became gradually separated which led to increasing subject specialization, but also to a lamentable lacuna within the various branches of Divinity. As the lack of dialogue between Biblical Studies and the various theological disciplines increased, a minority-group of scholars in the past few decades reacted and sought to re-establish the time-honoured bonds between the disciplines. The present volume is part of this intellectual response, with contributions from scholars of various professional and denominational backgrounds. Together, the book''s 25 chapters seek to reinvigorate the crucial cross-disciplinary dialogue, involving biblical, narrative, historical, systematic-theological and philosophic-theological perspectives. The book opens the horizon to contemporary research, and fills a lamentable research gap with a number of fresh contributions from scholars in the respective sub-disciplines
