Fourteen short stories fill Dreams & Dragons, in fantasy and science fiction, with loves lost and found, time travel and voices from beyond the grave, villains and heroes, and of course, some dreams and some dragons. At times these are uniquely quirky tales, at times deeply moving.

This textbook develops an 18-week program designed to guide prospective students through creating their own speculative fiction story, that is, a science fiction, fantasy, or horror story. Designed for homeschoolers and small-school settings, this textbook draws on excerpts from dozens of speculative fiction authors and writing experts. It gives detailed information about genre, cultural world building, physical world building, plot, character, character arc, heroes, villains, sidekicks, bystanders, description, conflict and tension, editing and revising, "your first chapter," voice, words and worldview, science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Each chapter in the course contains exercises for students, including extra credit activities, in addition to guiding the creating of an individual short story.

The teacher's edition includes a section on scope and sequence and contains answer keys.

In a future one thousand years from now, an echo of the Victorian past thrives. A future terraformed Venus sees our era of high technology as one of innumerable dangers. Dominated by the most advanced technological society on the planet, New Berlin, the nation and city-states of Venus deliberately imitate both the technology and culture of the Victorian Era. As nations chafe under the yoke of New Berlin, war breaks out--driving this culture so much like our past into a future entirely unlike our own. 

This short-story anthology explores the regions and cultures of Victorian Venus, from the metropolis of New Berlin, to the tropics, to the Arctic Circle. The war between New Berlin and two rebelling nations forms the backdrop of most of the tales.

A future Mars, one thousand years from now, which has collapsed back into a Medieval age was the backdrop for the 2015 short story anthology Medieval Mars. This story world idea imagined that Mars will be gifted with an even thicker atmosphere than Earth. That, coupled with Mars’ lower gravity, would make airships with relatively small gondolas possible, of the sort common in steampunk artwork. It also would make it possible for human beings to ride giant birds, especially in the places on Mars where the atmosphere is thickest. (And genetically engineered Komodo dragons also take flight within the pages of Medieval Mars.)

Human beings living on Mars as portrayed in Medieval Mars looked back at the past as time where technology became indistinguishable from magic. So the characters in these stories called the past “The Age of Magic” and revered swords made of titanium and other advanced metals from that time and the few bits of technology (like book readers) still remaining. “Lithium smiths” became the common term for those able to build batteries and electrical circuits, a term eventually applied to all experts in the technological past.

The story world also imagined that Spanish-language Baptists would spark a religious revival at some point prior to the main action of the stories, making a form of Protestant religion become steeped in nearly Medieval tradition. Making Spanish the language of prayer for most inhabitants of Mars.

Kristin Stieffel has crafted three novellas set within the backdrop of the world described above. Tales of the Phoenix contains all three novellas. The first of these, Flight, was itself featured within the pages of Medieval Mars. Its two sequel stories, Storm and Battle, haven’t been previously published anywhere.

Kristin’s Kingdom of Marineris is among the most technologically advanced societies on future Mars. Though even they really are only beginning to rebuild the world of scientific studies, the Age of Science.

These stories are rich in worldbuilding details, though even more focused on the memorable characters the stories portray.

            This anthology aims to collect the best available speculative fiction short stories written by Christian authors. That’s whether the stories have openly Christian themes or characters or not, without requiring the stories to have any specific theme. (The anthology also limits itself to clean fiction—that is, no profanity, graphic sexuality or extreme violence.)

            Over the past year, an online acquaintance questioned the purpose for the Mythic Orbits anthologies, stating that an anthology requires a unifying theme in order to succeed.  To make sense and be marketable.

            But there have been previous yearly anthologies based on the best science fiction and even fantasy from a given year (World’s Best Science Fiction, edited by Donald A. Wollheim, Terry Carr’s Best Science Fiction of the Year and Terry Carr’s Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year). So simply seeking the best available can be the goal of an anthology.

            And anthologies can be organized around the writers as well, especially when there’s something unusual about the category. For example, Ciencia Ficción Argentina: Antología de Cuentos (Argentine Science Fiction: Anthology of Stories) was an anthology known by its authors—the nationality of the writers important because Argentinians are not widely-known to write science fiction.

            So, is it widely-known all over the world that Christians write speculative fiction?

            Well, clearly Christians who themselves are speculative fiction writers know what they write. But does everybody else?

            Especially when we’re talking about theologically conservative Christians, Evangelicals of some sort, professed Bible-believing Christians, do people know about their works? Is it legitimate for people to wonder if writers with personal convictions along these lines produce speculative fiction, that is, science fiction and fantasy and related genres like LitRPG, paranormal, and horror?

            This book provides an answer: Not only do Christian writers produce speculative fiction stories, they write some great ones.
