This book aims to discuss in depth the current state of research and practice in database security. It documents progress and provides researchers and students with a broad perspective of recent developments in what is recognised as a key topic in business and in the public sector.

An edited collection of research on the most recent developments in rough set theory and data mining, the chapters in this work cover a range of topics that focus on discovering dependencies among data, and reasoning about vague, uncertain and imprecise information. The authors of these chapters have been careful to include fundamental research with explanations as well as coverage of rough set tools that can be used for mining data bases. This text should be a useful reference work for rough set researchers, database designers and developers, and for researchers new to the areas of data mining and rough sets.

Rough Sets and Data Mining: Analysis of Imprecise Data is an edited collection of research chapters on the most recent developments in rough set theory and data mining. Rough Sets and Data Mining: Analysis of Imprecise Data will be a useful reference work for rough set researchers, data base designers and developers, and for researchers new to the areas of data mining and rough sets.

Our purpose in assembling the papers in this collection is to introduce readers to studies of normal and abnormal behavior in Chinese culture. We want to offer a sense o/what psychiatrists and social scientists are doing to advance our under­ standing of this subject, including what fmdings are being made, what questions researched, what conundrums worried over. Since our fund of knowledge is obviously incomplete, we want our readers to be aware of the limits to what we know and to our acquisition of new knowledge. Although the subject is too vast and uncharted to support a comprehensive synthesis, in a few areas - e. g. , psychiatric epidemiology - enough is known for us to be able to present major reviews. The chapters themselves cover a variety of themes that we regard as both intrinsically interesting and deserving of more systematic evaluation. Many of the issues they address we believe to be valid concerns for comparative cross­ cultural studies. No attempt is made to artificially integrate these chapters, since the editors wish to highlight their distinctive interpretive frameworks as evidence of the rich variety of approaches that scholars take to this subject. 'We see this volume as a modest and self-consciously limited exploration. Here are some accounts and interpretations (but by no means all) of normal and ab­ normal behavior in the context of Chinese culture that we believe fashion a more discriminating understanding of at least a few important aspects of that subject.

Two themes seem to emerge repeatedly when reading through this volume. One is 'consensus' and the other is 'search'. There was a strong consensus during the Congress that children and families were the major and foremost concern of all present, regardless of their geographic origin or professional background. This concern was often expressed in terms of commitment to or as goal for the international mental health movement for the years to come. The second theme, 'search', represents an effort to translate this concern into activities: search for concrete, immediate goals, for ways and means of translating into actual programs and projects, for interested people to carry on the work and better ways to train them to do the work well, for ways to obtain support, and lastly, search for ways of coordinating efforts of people in different parts of the world. All these and other matters are taken up in the discussions in this volume. The complexity of problems encountered in a rapidly changing world and the diversity of resources available in different parts of the world, make the task of searching difficult and sometimes confusing. In spite of the earnest efforts made, the results may be inconclusive and some of those pro­ posed can be regarded only as hypotheses or ideas for experimentation.
