This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Knowledge Management, PAKM 2002, held in Vienna, Austria in December 2002. The 54 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 90 submissions. The papers presented are dealing with knowledge management issues in the Internet age from the technological and business points of view as well as from the organizational and cultural viewpoints.

All current issues in knowledge management are addressed, in perspective to topics like business process modeling, mobile computing, knowledge management systems, peer-to-peer networks, user interfaces, enterprise information systems, computer supported collaborative work, web information systems, web communities, ontologies, multimedia, semantic web, fuzzy logic.

The event took place on December 02–03, 2004 in Vienna. The PAKM conference series offers a communication forum and meeting ground for practitioners and researchers engaged in developing and deploying advanced bu- ness solutions for the management of knowledge and intellectual capital. Contributions pursuing integrated approaches which consider organizational, technological and c- tural issues of knowledge management have been elected for presentation. PAKM is a forum for people to share their views, to exchange ideas, to develop new insights, and to envision completely new kinds of solutions for knowledge management problems. The accepted papers are of high quality and are not too specialized so that the main issues can be understood by someone outside the respective ?eld. This is crucial for an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas. Like its predecessors, PAKM 2004 featured two invited talks. It is a real joy seeing the visibility of the conferenceincrease and noting that kno- edge management researchers and practitioners from all over the world submitted - pers. This year, 163 papers and case studies were submitted, from which 48 were - cepted.

The PAKM conference series is a forum for people to share their views, to exchange ideas, to develop new insights, and to envision completely new kinds of solutions to knowledge management problems, because to succeed in the accelerating pace of the “Internet age,” organizations will be obliged to efficiently leverage their most valuable and underleveraged resource: the intellectual capital of their highly educated, skilled, and experienced employees. Thus next-generation business solutions must be focussed on supporting the creation of value by adding knowledge-rich components as integral parts in the work process. The authors, who work at the leading edge of knowledge management, have pursued integrated approaches which consider both the technological side, and the business side, and the organizational and cultural issues. We hope the papers, covering a broad range of knowledge management topics, will be valuable, at the same extent, for researchers and practitioners developing knowledge management approaches and applications. It was a real joy seeing the visibility of the conference increase and noting that knowledge management researchers and practitioners from all over the world submitted papers. This year, 90 papers and case studies were submitted, from which 55 were accepted.

PAKM 2006, the Sixth International Conference on Practical Aspects of Knowledge Management, was held again in Vienna. It was a milestone for two reasons: First, it marked an anniversary – 10 years of PAKM conferences. The ?rst conference was held in Basel, Switzerland, in 1996, followed by the conf- ences in 1998 and 2000, in Basel as well. After that PAKM moved to Vienna where it was held in 2002, 2004, and 2006. Secondly, from now on PAKM will be “on tour”: It will be organized by di?erent people and be hosted at di?erent places all over the world. The PAKM Steering Committee will be responsible for selecting the conference chairs and the conference locations. The Steering Committee will also be responsible for the direction the PAKM conferences will take and will ensure their continuing high quality. For this year’s conference we received 123 submissions from 30 countries.

Das Buch stellt FRM vor, ein Frame-basiertes Modell zur Repräsentation von Wissen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der Ausarbeitung der Semantik seiner Repräsentationskonstrukte. Zur formalen Spezifikation dieser Semantik werden Integritätsbedingungen formuliert, die unzulässige, in jedem Fall bedeutungslose Repräsentationsstrukturen ausschließen. Damit wird die Basis gelegt für ein Wissensverwaltungssystem, das die Einhaltung dieser Integritätsbedingungen überwacht und somit die Gewährleistung der Validität einer Wissensbasis zu einem beträchtlichen Teil übernehmen kann. Ein(e) Wissensingenieur(in), der/die insbesondere beim Aufbau großer, vernetzter Wissensbasen Schwierigkeiten hat, die Übersicht zu bewahren, kann dadurch erheblich entlastet werden, und es wird somit ein Beitrag geleistet, die bei der Erstellung großer Wissensbasen entstehende Komplexitätsbarriere aufzubrechen. Neben der Spezifikation der Repräsentationsstrukturen von FRM werden auch Anfrage- und integritätserhaltende Änderungsoperationen diskutiert, womit ein häufig in Wissensrepräsentationssprachen anzutreffendes Defizit vermieden wird. Die Darstellung schlägt eine Brücke zwischen Ansätzen aus dem Datenbankbereich und dem Bereich der Künstlichen Intelligenz (KI). So ist der Gegenstand eines Frame-Repräsentationsmodells mit seinen mächtigen Modellierungsmöglichkeiten eindeutig ein KI-Thema, während die Aspekte der Integritätserhaltung, die sich aus dem Bedarf nach einer Unterstützung großer Datenmengen ableiten, eher typisch für die Betrachtungsweise im Datenbankbereich sind. Entsprechend werden Bezüge hergestellt zwischen FRM und einschlägigen Arbeiten aus dem Datenbankbereich und der KI sowie ferner der Linguistik und der Kognitionspsychologie.
