Dictionaries make fascinating reading when they are seen in their historical, educational and linguistic context. Working from a modern cultural perspective, the author uses her own research and the research of others to tell the story of German language dictionaries, and in doing so throws light on the viewpoints of dictionary authors and users and on dictionaries' academic and social dimensions.

Since the 1970s, language historians have been describing systemic linguistic phenomena in their social and cultural context. This volume deals with systematic aspects of culturally-orientated language history and with the links between language history and other disciplines.
