However, it also cautions against potential risks, including job displacement and cybersecurity threats. The Social Outlook is a flagship ESCAP publication produced every two years with a dedicated focus on social development issues in Asia and the Pacific. In 2024, the Social Outlook focuses on future proofing social protection in Asia and the Pacific in the presence of three global megatrends, namely climate change, demographic shifts including population ageing and the emergence of digital technologies. the analysis contained in the report aims to strengthen the evidence base and build capacity of policy makers on how to future proof and finance their respective social protection systems. The Report is structured around 5 chapters. Chapter 1 reviews poverty and inequality amidst complex crises in Asia and the Pacific. Chapter 2 assesses the status of social protection system while Chapter 3 explores how social protection systems need to adapt to global megatrends. In Asia and the Pacific, the climate crisis intersects with digital transformations through a complex mix of challenges and opportunities, creating a series of vicious but also potentially virtuous cycles. The Asia-Pacific Digital Transformation Report 2024 considers how digital transformations will structurally and irreversibly affect the trajectory of climate change. This report is part of ESCAP Financing for Development Series. One in every six persons in Asia and the Pacific has some form of disability. This amounts to 650 million men, women and children. The number is expected to rise over the next decades due to population ageing, natural disasters, chronic health conditions, road traffic injuries, poor working conditions and other factors. This publication presents the region and world with the first regional comprehensive progress report on participation of persons with disabilities in development opportunities. It derives its substance from the midpoint review of the current Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities, 2013-2022, and the implementation of the Incheon Strategy to “Make the Right Real” for Persons with Disabilities in Asia and the Pacific. It provides policymakers across different ministries, as well as civil society and persons with disabilities, with the chance to reflect on the current status of disability-inclusive development in the region, and set forward a path ensuring that persons with disabilities are included and empowered across all dimensions of sustainable development.
