Most histories of exploration are written from the viewpoint of the explorers. This book, now available in paperback, focuses instead on the cultural encounters between European explorers and non-European people, reconstructing the experiences of both sides. The result is a remarkable work of comparative cultural history, ranging from North America to the South Pacific and from the voyages of Columbus to those of Captain Cook. Bitterli distinguishes three basic forms of cultural encounter: superficial contact, as in the early relations between Europe and China; a prolonged relationship, like that between missionaries and the North American Indians; and collision, leading to the destruction of the weaker partner, as happened in the Spanish Conquest of the West Indies and of Mexico. In a series of case studies Bitterli examines these types of cultural encounter, drawing on a wide range of primary sources.

Urs Bitterli legt eine innovative Darstellung der europäischen Kulturgeschichte im Zeitraum von der Jahrhundertwende bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs vor. Er erzählt dabei den Geschichtsverlauf nicht in der üblichen Art nach, sondern stellt ihn durch 50 wichtige und zum Zeitpunkt ihres Erscheinens repräsentative Bücher vor. Besprochen werden Titel wie «Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen» von Thomas Mann, «Brave New World» von Aldous Huxley, «Draussen vor der Tür» von Wolfgang Borchert oder «Eichmann in Jerusalem. Ein Bericht von der Banalität des Bösen » von Hannah Arendt. Die Werke entstammen der europäischen Literatur, deren Autoren und Inhalte werden auf wenigen Seiten prägnant vorgestellt und ihre Wirkung beurteilt. Unterteilt ist das Buch in acht Hauptkapitel, die durch je einen kurzen, aber informativen Überblickstext eingeführt werden. Vertieft geht Urs Bitterli auf den Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg, auf die Zwischenkriegszeit und auf den Holocaust ein. So entsteht für den an Geschichte und Belletristik interessierten Laien eine äusserst anregende Kulturgeschichte, die spannende Zusammenhänge aufzeigt und Lust auf weitere Lektüre macht.
