Digital technologies have profoundly impacted the arts and expanded the field of sculpture since the 1950s. Art history, however, continues to pay little attention to sculptural works that are conceived and ‘materialized’ using digital technologies. How can we rethink the artistic medium in relation to our technological present and its historical precursors? A number of theoretical approaches discuss the implications of the so-called ‘Aesthetics of the Digital’, referring, above all, to screen-based phenomena. For the first time, this publication brings together international and trans-historical research perspectives to explore how digital technologies re-configure the understanding of sculpture and the sculptural leading into the (post-)digital age. Der Band untersucht Skalierungsverfahren als Kulturtechnik, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf dem Vermessen, Abtasten, der Transformation und Projektion von Objekten in Zeit und Raum liegt. Aus kunsthistorischer, bild- und medienwissenschaftlicher Perspektive werden die komplexen Wechselverhältnisse zwischen Zwei- und Dreidimensionalität erforscht. Der Fokus richtet sich auf Fotografie und die (digitalen) skulpturalen Verfahren, und somit auf zwei Bereiche, die zunehmend miteinander verwoben sind. Das Konzept der Verschmelzung von Dimensionen ist sowohl in der zeitgenössischen digitalisierten Fotografie als auch in der digitalen Skulptur hochaktuell. Die Publikation befasst sich mit den Grenzen der Skalierbarkeit, der Ästhetik ihrer Bruchstellen und den glitches, die beim Überschreiten dieser Grenzen auftreten können.

Adopting a transnational perspective, this book takes a look at the art history of production, transport and logistics with its heterogenous actors, objects, institutions, and their interwoven stories. The production of art goes along with complex infrastructures that are often unseen and associated with political and ecological challenges. To what extent is mobility already taken into account in the production of art? What role do customs regulations, political border restrictions, and sustainability play?
