This book presents recent developments and research trends in the field of feature selection for data and pattern recognition, highlighting a number of latest advances. The field of feature selection is evolving constantly, providing numerous new algorithms, new solutions, and new applications. Some of the advances presented focus on theoretical approaches, introducing novel propositions highlighting and discussing properties of objects, and analysing the intricacies of processes and bounds on computational complexity, while others are dedicated to the specific requirements of application domains or the particularities of tasks waiting to be solved or improved.Divided into four parts – nature and representation of data; ranking and exploration of features; image, shape, motion, and audio detection and recognition; decision support systems, it is of great interest to a large section of researchers including students, professorsand practitioners.

The International Conference on Man-Machine Interactions (ICMMI 2009) commemorates the life and work of Adam Mrozek (1948-1999). From 1970, he worked at the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Informatics, Polish Academy of Sciences, and from 1992 at the Institute of Informatics, Silesian University of Technology, Gliwice, Poland, in 1998 taking the post of a Vice Director of the Institute for Researchand the head of the Computer Systems Theory and Design Division. During his lifetime the scienti?c interests of A. Mrozek were highly diversi?ed. This ICMMI 2009 volume re?ects a number of research streams that were either directly or indirectly in?uenced by Adam Mrozek's work on the dev- opment of computer systems and software that makes it possible to employ them in a variety of human activities ranging from logic studies and arti?cial 1 2 3 intelligence , rule-based control of technological processes , image analysis , 4 expert systems and decision support , to assistance in creative works. In particular, this ICMMI volume points to a number of new advances in man-machinecommunication,interactionbetweenvisualizationandmodeling, rough granular computing in human-centric information processing and the discovery of a?nities between perceptual granules. The topical subdivisions of this volume include human-computer interactions, decision support, rough 1 Jankowski, A., Skowron, A.: Logic for arti?cial intelligence: A Rasiowa-Pawlak school perspective. Man-machine interaction is the interdisciplinary field, focused on a human and a machine in conjunction. It is the intersection of computer science, behavioural sciences, social psychology, ergonomics, security. It encompasses study, design, implementation, and evaluation of small- and large-scale, interacting, computing, hardware and software systems dedicated for human use. Man-machine interaction builds on supportive knowledge from both sides, the machine side providing techniques, methods and technologies relevant for computer graphics, visualisation, programming environments, the human side bringing elements of communication theory, linguistics, social sciences, models of behaviour. The discipline aims to improve ways in which machines and their users interact, making hardware and software systems better adapted to user's needs, more usable, more receptive, and optimised for desired properties. This monograph is the second edition in the series, providing the reader with a selection of high-quality papers dedicated to current progress, new developments and research trends in man-machine interactions area. In particular, the topical subdivisions of this volume include human-computer interfaces, robot control and navigation systems, bio-data analysis and mining, pattern recognition for medical applications, sound, text and image processing, design and decision support, rough and fuzzy systems, crisp and fuzzy clustering, prediction and regression, algorithms and optimisation, and data management systems.

This research book provides the reader with a selection of high-quality texts dedicated to current progress, new developments and research trends in feature selection for data and pattern recognition. Even though it has been the subject of interest for some time, feature selection remains one of actively pursued avenues of investigations due to its importance and bearing upon other problems and tasks. This volume points to a number of advances topically subdivided into four parts: estimation of importance of characteristic features, their relevance, dependencies, weighting and ranking; rough set approach to attribute reduction with focus on relative reducts; construction of rules and their evaluation; and data- and domain-oriented methodologies.
