This book analyses the deradicalisation and peacebuilding programme undertaken in north-east Nigeria, following the Boko Haram insurgency in the region. The intensity of the insurgents’ violence necessitated measures to combat fundamentalism, including military operations, amnesty, deradicalisation and other strategies. Focusing on the counter-insurgency operations and the various government responses, this work highlights the successes and failures of the approaches adopted by the government in the north-east of Nigeria. The strategies and programmes examined include both military and non-military approaches, but especially non-kinetic measures such as deradicalisation, rehabilitation, reintegration and peace-building programmes. In contrast to previous works, this book addresses neglected areas of inquiry such as the typologies of deradicalisation interventions (of which there are about five), and especially the intellectual response of the Ulama in countering Boko Haram extremism and peacebuilding. The study broadens the horizon of inquiry on insurgency, deradicalisation and peacebuilding in Nigeria, in Africa and globally, by delving deeper into the subject matter using a methodological approach that draws on primary sources from key actors and stakeholders. In addition, the book introduces a new theoretical approach, entitled the ‘Multiple Front Reaction Model’, and will challenge future works to consolidate or synthesise its assumptions. This book will be of interest to students of deradicalisation, political violence, African politics and security studies.

Babayo Sule and Usman Sambo analyse the recent Nigerian election reforms and their impact on the outcome of elections. This book provides a comprehensive analysis of electoral administration in the Fourth Republic of Nigeria (1999-present day) and its regulatory, institutional, and procedural reforms. These reforms will not only be examined in their basic framework, but will also be observed for their credibility, integrity and transparency. This book focuses on how these reforms were developed and how they work. Sule and Sambo argue for fundamental changes in the administration of elections in Nigeria, including the introduction of electronic processes such as the Smart Card Readers in 2015 and Bimodal Verification Accreditation Systems in the 2023 General Elections that have positively impacted the electoral process and integrity, without forgetting the antecedents of the numerous challenges faced during the period. They examine not only technological changes but also constitutional reforms, procedural reforms, and institutional reforms. Introducing a new dimension to the study of elections, the authors provide a clear picture of the roles of all the actors involved, the challenges they faced, the factors that enhanced integrity and credibility and the daunting challenges that continue to affect the success of the elections. Thus, this book presents practical measures and policy implications for an improved process in future elections in Nigeria.

Banditry in Nigeria has been intensifying for almost a decade, however there is no study that focuses specifically on the financial impact or political economy of banditry. Filling this gap, authors Sambo and Sule explore this unique and new aspect and dimension of the banditry in Nigeria, comparing cases in Africa and Asia with the Nigerian experience to provide a view of the political economy implications of banditry at regional and global levels. The Political Economy of Banditry in Nigeria explores the escalation of new areas of political economy triggered by banditry in Nigeria, where new strategies of bandits have turned crime into a multi-billion Naira business. The chapters investigate acts such as kidnapping for ransom, abduction of school children for ransom, illegal mining, capture and confiscation of farmlands by the bandits, collection of taxes and levies by the bandits from the local populace, as well as the cost of response by policy makers. Delving into an emerging security crisis relating to the political economy of banditry, the chapters explore the impacts causing food insecurity, shortage of livestock, and a huge outflow of government funds. Chronicling these events beyond Nigeria’s borders, the analysis shows the financial costs or economic loss incurred by the Nigerian state and looks at what can be done.Concluding with practical policy implications and potential solutions for combatting economic crisis and poverty, the authors pose strategies relating to institutional strengthening, social inclusion and political will. This is important reading for scholars interested in securing lasting peace and prosperity in Nigeria and the wider international community beyond its borders.

This book examines how State Governors, the chief executives in the second tier of government in Nigeria’s constitutional order, have become the pivotal actors in the Fourth Republic. Following the post–Civil War state creations and the expansion to 36 states in 1996, governors have consolidated their influence over party machinery, candidate selection, and resource control. They also shape presidential tickets in major parties and nominate federal cabinet members, as well as decide who become their successors, a hallmark of godfatherism, in their states. In addition, they influence nominations to the Senate, House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly, and dominate local government finances and administration. Since 2007, former governors have routinely emerged as presidential contenders, underscoring their centrality to national politics. Yet, their outsized roles, have seldom been interrogated in Nigeria’s political discourse. This detailed examination of gubernatorial authority, tactics, and consequences for democratic progress, governance procedures, and electoral dynamics in the Fourth Republic, fills a gap in the literature.
