The series of Interdisciplinary Conferences on Production, Logistics and Traffic (ICPLT) address the research community as well as practitioners in these fields with special attention to links and interfaces between the three disciplines. The fourth ICPLT in particular deals with technology from intralogistics to automated trucking driving as well as the societal aspects of commercial transport.

To contribute to a high-level and beneficial exchange between authorities in politics and municipalities with researchers and practitioners in production and logistics management the ICPLT has asked for contributions from the three disciplines to better understand innovative technologies, best practises and latest results. These contributions have been evaluated and selected based on a double-blind review process to become part of this book. It comprises 21 contributions examining trends and challenges for commercial transport as the essential link for production, logistics and society. Therefore, innovative technologies and strategies are presented and discussed to better understand the interdependencies, conflicts of interest and to develop feasible solutions.

This book reports on recent research and developments at the interface between the areas of production, logistics and traffic. Gathering the proceedings of the 6th ICPLT, held on March 22-23, 2023, at TU Dortmund University, in Germany, this volume gives a special emphasis to theories, trends and technologies for planning and operating freight transport systems in a sustainable and resilient way. The twenty-two contributions included in this book cover algorithms, models, and experimental methods to addresses challenges and knowledge gaps relating to traffic flows and logistic processes. They also report on advanced technologies, human factors research and strategies that should help better understand the interdependencies and conflicts of interest in the field of production, logistics and traffic, and to develop feasible solutions. All in all, this book provides a timely snapshot of research and developments concerning freight and public transport, cargo bikes, maritimeand rail transport, electrical and hydrogen vehicles, simulation and optimization in production and logistics, production and supply chain management, sustainable logistics, and intralogistics and automation. It offers extensive information to researchers, engineers and other professionals, and public authorities that are active in all the above- mentioned fields.  

Die Güterlogistik ist ein Grundpfeiler der deutschen und internationalen Wirtschaft. Sie unterliegt einerseits wachsenden Mengen und Anforderungen, bietet andererseits aber auch vielfältige Gestaltungsoptionen und generiert damit steigende Konzipierungs- und Optimierungsbedarfe.

Für deren Lösung stellt vorliegendes Buch die Verkehrs- und Transportlogistik umfassend und systematisch dar. Das Buch vermittelt intensive fachliche Kenntnisse über logistische Dienstleistungen und ihre Anbieter sowie die Verkehrssysteme mit ihrer jeweiligen Infrastruktur, Organisation und Technik. Ferner werden Analyse-, Planungs- und Optimierungsmethoden für die Wissenschaft und Praxis verständlich erläutert.

Logistik spielt eine entscheidende Rolle für das Funktionieren unserer modernen Volkswirtschaft. Moderne Netze in der Logistik sorgen für die Verfügbarkeit von Waren und Gütern, werden aber auf Grund steigender Anforderungen immer größer, komplexer und schwerer zu planen und zu beherrschen. Um heutige und zukünftige Netze der Logistik aufzubauen und zu betreiben, müssen moderne Methoden der Analyse, Planung und Optimierung eingesetzt werden, die in unterschiedlichen Wissenschaftsbereichen entwickelt wurden.

Das Buch fasst wesentliche Resultate aus den Forschungsarbeiten im Sonderforschungsbereich 559 zusammen. In diesem von der deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft seit 1998 finanzierten Forschungsprojekt arbeiteten Wissenschaftler aus der Logistik, der Informatik, der Betriebswirtschaftslehre, der Statistik und der Soziologie zusammen, um neue Methoden zur Planung und zum Betrieb großer Netze der Logistik zu entwickeln und auf praxisnahe Beispiele anzuwenden.

Das Buch gliedert sich in 4 Teile, die jeweils unterschiedliche Aspekte beleuchten. Im ersten Teil steht die Analyse und Simulation großer Netze der Logistik im Mittelpunkt. Es werden Methoden und Softwarewerkzeuge vorgestellt. Der zweite Teil beleuchtet die Optimierung und Verbesserung von Netzen. Neben Ansätzen zur Optimierung statischer Modelle werden auch Algorithmen zur Optimierung von Simulationsmodellen vorgestellt. Teil 3 ist der Planung von großen Netzen gewidmet. Zentrale Aspekte sind die Einbeziehung des Menschen in die Planung, die Weiterentwicklung der Netzwerk-Balanced-Scorecard zur Einbeziehung betriebswirtschaftlicher Aspekte und die Entscheidungsunterstützung durch Assistenzsysteme. Der letzte Teil beschreibt die Anwendung der entwickelten Verfahren auf reale Probleme. Diese wurden aus den Bereichen Redistributionsnetze, Lufttransportnetze und Seehafenhinterlandverkehre gewählt.

The „EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr“ was a winner in the Leading Edge Science Cluster competition run by the German federal Ministry of Education and Research. The mission and aim of the „EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr“ is to facilitate tomorrow’s individuality – in the sense of individual goods supply, mobility, and production – using 75 percent of today’s resources. Efficiency – both in economical and ecological terms – is enabled by state-of-the-art and innovative logistical solutions including transportation, production and intralogistics.These proceedings “Efficiency and Logistics” give first answers from 27 research projects as an insight into the current state of research of Europe’s leading research and development cluster in logistics and as a contribution to the discussion on how logistics as a science can help to cope with foreseeable resource shortage and sustainability as global challenges.

In den politischen und ökonomischen Entscheidungsprozessen muss der Wirtschaftsverkehr einen hohen Stellenwert einnehmen und in der Wissenschaft muss es Ziel sein, ihn möglichst realitätsnah durch Modelle und Szenarien abzubilden.

Der Fokus der vorliegenden Proceedings liegt insbesondere auf aktuellen Forschungsansätzen, die sich mit der Datengenerierung von Wirtschaftsverkehren und der Bewertung der Datenqualität beschäftigen. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt des Buches setzt sich mit der Modellentwicklung von Wirtschaftsverkehren sowie Strategien zur Verkehrssteuerung und -prognose im Hinblick auf die Entscheidungsfindung auseinander.

Das Buch richtet sich an Vertreter der Wissenschaft und Praxis aus den Disziplinen Logistik, Verkehrsforschung und Raumplanung, die an wissenschaftlichen und praxisorientierten Forschungsansätzen interessiert sind.

Die Beiträge wurden im Rahmen eines Double-Blind-Review-Verfahrens von acht Professorinnen und Professoren, die den Programmausschuss der Fachtagung Wirtschaftsverkehr 2013 bilden, ausgewählt.
