This book explores an eminently human phenomenon: our capacity to engage with the possible, to go beyond what is present, visible, or given in our existence. Possibility studies is an emerging field of research including topics as diverse as creativity, imagination, innovation, anticipation, counterfactual thinking, wondering, the future, social change, hope, agency, and utopia. The Possible: A Sociocultural Theory contributes to this wide field by developing a sociocultural account of the possible grounded in the notions of difference, position, perspective, dialogue, action, and culture. This theory aims to offer conceptual, methodological, and practical tools for all those interested in studying human possibility and cultivating it in education, at the workplace, in everyday life, and in society.

This book uncovers a transformative period in the history of creativity studies, tracing its emergence as a distinct field of inquiry during the pivotal decades from 1950 to 1970. Building on the foundation laid by The Creativity Reader (2018), which explored creativity research from 1850 to 1950, this new volume turns to the mid-20th century to recover the voices, ideas, and debates that helped shape creativity as we know it today. The book includes 27 never-before-published speeches delivered by pioneering scholars and practitioners at the Creative Problem Solving Institute (CPSI), an annual conference hosted by the Creative Education Foundation. In addition, a number of speeches were drawn from a special creativity program hosted by Cooper Union Forum. These archival recordings, now transcribed for the first time, feature seminal figures such as Alex Osborn and J.P. Guilford whose work laid the intellectual and practical foundations for contemporary creativity research, training, and assessment. The volume also includes views on creativity by other notable mid-century intellectuals such as Joseph Campbell, Moses Hadas, and Gardner Murphy.Complemented by commentary from today's leading scholars across psychology, education, design, business, and engineering, these primary texts are illuminated through interdisciplinary perspectives that connect past insights to present-day challenges. The volume not only revives foundational creativity theories and methods but also invites readers to rediscover forgotten or overlooked contributions with renewed relevance for the future of creativity and innovation. This book serves as both a historical recovery and a forward-looking resource. It captures the moment when creativity became a serious subject of academic and practical interest, offering a rare opportunity to engage with the origins of a field that continues to grow in importance. For scholars, educators, and practitioners alike, this collection is an essential reference--one that honors the legacy of creativity's early architects while equipping a new generation to carry their ideas forward.

Creativity is of rising interest to scholars and laypeople alike. Creativity in the arts, however, is very different from creativity in science, business, sports, cooking, or teaching. This book brings together top experts in the field from around the world to discuss creativity across many different domains. Each chapter includes clear definitions, intriguing research, potential measures, and suggestions for development or future directions. After a broad discussion of creativity across different domains, subsequent chapters look deeper into those individual domains (traditional arts, sciences, business, newer domains, and everyday life) to explore how creativity varies when expressed in different ways. Ultimately, the book offers a future-looking perspective integrating the different variations of creativity across domains.

This book is dedicated to wonder and wondering, mundane phenomena that, despite their great value for education and other spheres of human experience, often go unnoticed both inside and outside the classroom. Praised as the origin of philosophy in ancient times, the concern for understanding and educating wonder has been present throughout history. It is not only the case that this basic psychological process opens our everyday experience to what is possible, what lies beyond the here-and-now, but does so with extraordinary consequences. Wonder transforms our experience of the world from early childhood onwards. It is ever-present in children’s play and games, it offers constant opportunities for learning and it fuels our creativity. And yet, we know little about this phenomenon, its biological, psychological, social and cultural underpinning, and even less about how to foster it and harness its benefits in education. This book fills this gap and gives a scientific yet accessible account of wondering. It proposes a new way of understanding wonder, while at the same time offering practical tools for cultivating wonder within ourselves, our interpersonal relations, and within educational practice.
